If Chelsea or Spurs win the Europa League

Who cares, we're only gonna get humiliated and knocked out by the first decent team we meet out of the group stages.

#crapfan.

I think what the Echo are saying is the rules say the FA cup runners up only get the Europa league place if the winners are in the Champions League.

By their reckoning if Chelsea win the FA cup but finish in 5th the runners up don't get the extra place, it'll go to the next league place

You're wrong it's the other way round mate. In that scenario the place would go to the league 6th place side

From what the mail say, if true, it sounds like there isn't a rule for this. CL qualification is specified, probably under the assumption the only teams who will win it are top 4 teams anyway

If this is the case it's down to the FA, like in that situation in 2005. It'll be easier for them to choose cup runners up, tighten up the phrasing and set the precedent that way. That's what they'll do if we finish 6th.

If Liverpool finish 6th of course, they'll choose them obviously (even though privately the club themselves would probably rather not bother)

What do you mean if?

The question should be re-phrased as 'when' Spurs win the Europa.....

you spelt chelsea wrong.

fact of the matter is, all we virtually had to do was beat wigan and we were in europe (should have been able to see off millwall without being disrespectful). Now we have to try and finish top 5, not get in through the back door hoping something else will do us a favour

Here you go;

Redistribution rules
A Europa League place is vacated when a team qualifies for both the Champions League and the Europa League, or qualifies for the Europa League by more than one method. When a place is vacated, it is redistributed within the national association by the following rules:
When the domestic cup winners (considered as the "highest-placed" qualifier within the national association with the latest starting round) also qualify for the Champions League, their Europa League place is vacated. As a result, either of the following teams qualify for the Europa League:
The domestic cup runners-up, provided they have not yet qualified for European competitions, qualify for the Europa League as the "lowest-placed" qualifier (with the earliest starting round), with the other Europa League qualifiers moved up one "place".
Otherwise, the highest-placed team in the league which have not yet qualified for European competitions qualify for the Europa League, with the Europa League qualifiers which finish above them in the league moved up one "place".
When the domestic cup winners also qualify for the Europa League through league position, their place through the league position is vacated. As a result, the highest-placed team in the league which have not yet qualified for European competitions qualify for the Europa League, with the Europa League qualifiers which finish above them in the league moved up one "place" if possible.
For associations where a Europa League place is reserved for the League Cup winners, they always qualify for the Europa League as the "lowest-placed" qualifier (or as the second "lowest-placed" qualifier in cases where the cup runners-up qualify as stated above). If the League Cup winners have already qualified for European competitions through other methods, this reserved Europa League place is taken by the highest-placed league team in the league which have not yet qualified for European competitions.
A Fair Play place is taken by the highest-ranked team in the domestic Fair Play table which have not yet qualified for European competitions.

I think footlong hotdog just put the nail in this

we need to fight for 5th but its nice to know Chelsea winning the FA cup which is pretty ****ing likely should provide us a safetey net for europa

This happens every year. It's boss

People post various things, then people counter post things (in bold) from various Official websites.

People argue over fine-print and other people jib it because it's too confusing.

Then we dont qualify anyway.

Awesome xoxo

Buzzin.

So then the only way 6th gets into Europe is if Chelsea win the FA Cup and finish 5th. Any other result means we have to finish in the top 5.
