Hypothetical Martinez question

Would we be in a better position right now with Martinez still in charge?

...and spent £200M a bit more wisely than that Dutch Disaster.

Well in "Ronk".
Exactly what I'm getting at.

We would've spent properly and likely brought in a De Bruyne type player etc.

Funnily enough Klaassen would've fitted into his style seamlessly.

Klaassen would have found a role somewhere. I think he'd have played him further back where he played the bulk of the time at Ajax though distributing the ball.

definitely over egging how bad Martinez was here

first season superb,

second season last English team in Europe and if stones was fit to play over alcaraz I genuinely believe we'd have gotten past kiev ( we hit the post a couple of times in that5 match, they scored worldies, it was just one of them games )

two semi finals the season after, missed a pen in 1 and against city we were absolutey crippled by the decision to allow them the second goal when it had went out of play

I think once the season got to a certain point where we couldn't realistically do much they sacrificed it for the cups and it nearly worked

he's a far better manager that allardyce in my opinion

Pathetic. Truly pathetic. We were the last English team in Europe because we played on a Thursday and got to play Young Boys instead of Barcelona or Bayern Munich like other English teams.

He had to go because he couldn't or more likely wouldn't go into hunker down mode and play out of a crisis with defensive solidity.

Still, that doesnt bury the fact he had us playing some very pleasing football in the three seasons he was here.

And the worst of his tenure here was finishing 11th instead of 7th...NEA.

No one on here would claim 7th as a 'successful season' but it was the realistic target last season and we achieved it. You seem to be making out like there was little difference in the 7th placed finish compared with the 11th placed ones and that is just not true.

The fact is we finished last season with 61 points, 15 points above 8th. In Martinez' final 2 seasons he had us fighting it out with the likes of Swansea (finished 9 points below them in 14/15), and we managed a pathetic return of 47 points in both of them.

Whilst we went through tough periods last season we still beat City 4-0 at home and had excellent home form. The home form during Martinez' final season was an absolute disgrace.

And you're sugar coating the reality. I've been watching us since the mid 90s and I can honestly say that I have never felt the anger and disappointment in our team as much as his final 2 seasons.

Some of the results this season have run that close, granted.
