How's Moyes feeling now.

He was the right man at the time to come in and sort the mess out that he inherited.

Turned the club completely around on a shoe string, bringing in some fabulous bargains and making household names of unknown players.

I think the biggest kicker was not only losing key men when on the verge of the FA Cup, but the emergence of the super wealthy Manchester City. A club that had spent years playing in the lower leagues was suddenly buying top class players and came in for Joleon Lescott.

Moyes lost a bit of heart that summer imo.
And it never returned. The lack of funding having finished 5th two years running, and about to be overtook by another cash rich team just took the wind out of our sails.

Shame he made the comments he did at Man U as that tarnished an excellent and appreciated job that he did here. He probably stayed a couple of seasons too long, but without out him I dread to think where we could have been.

Great post, never thought of it like that but I agree wholeheartedly.

For the benefit of newer supporters like yours truly, what is the source of the Moyes hate? Leaving for United?

He tried to buy Fellaini and Baines for £20M after he left us, despite bemoaning about other clubs unsettling players/low balling whilst he was at Everton. He also didn't bother signing a new contract as he had already been tapped up meaning we lost out on any compensation.

I actually had sympathy for the man when he was at Sunderland, seems he was sold a lemon by Ellis Short and promised non-existent transfer funds, hence his pessimism when he told the fans to prepare for another relegation fight in September. His pragmatic and uninspiring attitude wouldn't of helped of course, but I don't think there would be many managers who would have kept Sunderland up with all the problems (poor squad, injuries etc.) they had last season.

Moyes seems a thoroughly decent man with a very pragmatic managerial approach, one that worked exceptionally well for us for six or so years, but just when it looked like we really would push on in about 2008, things just started to go a bit stale.

The Man U job just never fit him, however even in spite of that, for the United board to sack him after one year before he had a chance to step out of SAF's shadow and build "his" team, was harsh. Good luck to him in the future.

He's been fired 3 times since he left us for "the big time at United". When he left his star was on the rise, he was destined for greatness. As we speak, he'd be lucky to land a job in the SPL. I have to believe he doesn't think about Everton much, if at all. We are history to him, and he is history to us.

To coin a phrase Moyes' tenure was Strong and Stable, we would never have gone down but never have gone up any further either. Did a good job, was the right time for him to leave for everyone

His skill was getting the best (somehow, given his dour outlook) from players players at the basement. When he went to United and had money to spend, his dithering showed that he wasn't able to adapt to making big purchases and using that kind of cash.
Whereas he did well spotting good players in the basement, I think he'd have started splashing too much cash on poor players if here now. Not sure he could look up enough.

I know exactly where we would of been.... Obscurity. Moyes was terrific for us, Saved us actually. A big debt of gratitude he is/was owed. As you said though... The United thing was handled very poorly.... from the same man who used to quote "grass isn't greener" at want away players....he tarnished any good feelings which is a huge shame.
I would still buy the man a pint if he stopped round here... But I would put a bit of wee in it first.
