I love this photo. Two Everton icons and the look on Howard's face is a picture.

I don't just like this. I pay homage to it.

Joe Royle struggles too.
Everton do look after past players though.

They do, and we know that because we are Everton fans and we know about our charity work in this respect. But elsewhere, there must be loads of players now suffering, who didn't earn millions, and who don't have a support network from their ex-clubs. I remember when Andy Gray packed it in, he said his doctors told him he was nailed on for arthritis in later life as he had to play so often when injured but had taken injections to get by.

Howard's family asked for no floral tributes, but a donation to arthritis I believe.
Must be relevant.

Granada north west news tonight was quality . Recorded it and watching it now . In tears watching it. Especially watching big Duncan in bits

Just want to say we don't usually get much in terms of press spotlight but sky and itv and bbc have reported this brilliantly today . It just shows what a giant we had in charge of our great club.

I've fallen out of love a lot with football lately it bores me to bits. BUT today has proved my love of the toffees is still as strong as it's ever been .

We are a unique club and I'd rather have the Everton family and spirit the way it is than some mercenary coming in and destroying everything Everton football club stands for . I want us to get taken over but a I prey it's done by the right people.

I think it's going to be a YouTube night of our great 80s side

Onward evertonians .....

Howard Kendall funeral: Bill Kenwright delivers captivating eulogy to the Everton giant

js_lec_291015_kenwright.jpg

Bill Kenwright admitted he wasn’t sure who he was meant to be when he stood at the lectern to talk about Howard Kendall.

Chairman, fan or friend?

As he readied himself to talk, he didn’t know, but as soon as he spoke straight from his broken heart about a man he called his “idol”, it was clear that it didn’t matter.

Because there was an Evertonian, among many at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, whose life had been touched by the great man and he wanted to share his memories with us.

Mr Kenwright, who had know Howard for over half a century, talked of him as the “midfield rock” in Everton’s vaunted Holy Trinity, and then as the greatest manager in the club’s history but also as his mate; a man Bill would refer to, simply, as ‘H’.

And the last word, at the end of a terribly sad, poignant but also funny service, would belong to him.

Everyone was captivated by Bill Kenwright's eulogy to Howard Kendall
He had tenderly touched Howard’s coffin with one hand on his way up to the lectern but on his way back down the steps, Everton’s chairman pressed a little harder with both of palms as he said farewell one last time.

The Blues chairman has always been a powerful and prodigious public speaker but he will not have relished this moment.

Nevertheless the delivery of his eulogy was captivating as everyone hung off every one of his words.

Much thought, anguish, heartache and love for the great man will have gone into what he said but Kenwright did not need notes or a script - it just came naturally.

But he conceded had he needed a moment to compose himself beforehand.

Elton John’s ‘I Guess That’s Why They Call it the Blues’ filled the Cathedral as the funeral procession made their way in and this hauntingly beautiful choice of song had brought Bill to tears.

The chairman’s choice of words were also deeply touching but on such a sad day, also heart-warming and comforting.

Manchester United and former Everton striker Wayne Rooney was at the service
Kenwright spoke with the enthusiasm only a fan can when describing Howard as a player.

“Wayne, if only you had seen him”, he said, looking at Wayne Rooney in the rows in front of him, as he did.

But that same pride came through as Everton’s chairman recalled the time Howard returned for his third spell as manager after Andy Gray had turned down the club down to remain at Sky Sports.

Andy Gray was one of the Blues most successful players and nearly took over as manager
“What made him the legend that he was? He understood us. He understood Everton. He loved the camaraderie, the team,” Kenwright said.

“He would love the fact that you all came here today. That’s what made him great. We’ll never get over it. He was a blue.”

As he returned to his seat, touching Howard’s coffin on his way, Everton’s chairman received a round of applause.

His last words?

“Thank-you H. Thanks for everything.”

He spoke for us all.

Without being mawkish mate, this old club of ours does just "get to you" doesn't it?Days like today just ram it home to me.

Yep. Take it for granted 99% of the time. But today was awful, brilliant, tearful, and full of pride. All at the same time. Had tears in my eyes most of the day, but not just of grief. The crowds, and the applause, and the ovation when his coffin was carried into the service, were such fitting, Everton moments.

Sleep well Howard. And thanks.

Upgraded mate. ;)

Losing someone from the Everton family really is like losing someone from your own. I didn'think it would hit me this hard. Maybe it's an age thing because it was my era and I did enjor Howards company on a couple of occasions but I am devastated. I love this club of ours
