I don't think it's a ridiculous notion. West Brom were neck and neck with us for a long time last year before blowing up at the end of the season. This time we'll be playing at least 10 more games, hopefully more like 20, and we don't currently have a reliable goalscorer to blow the fodder away like Lukaku did. I still think we'll finish 7th but it's hardly an outrageous suggestion that we might not.

We'll finish top six . Six teams can't all possibly stay there at least one has to have a disaster. Doesn't mean I'm optimistic about the season. We need a top of the range striker ready to go for after the break.

Arsenal's dodgy form and Spurs playing at Wembley both provide us with opportunities. Some people are never satisfied and sound like deluded Newcastle supporters, expecting a bit of money to make us top four overnight. Others are fickle and a few good results will having them thinking we're title challengers. Clearly signings so far have improved the depth of our squad, saying otherwise is plain wrong. Hopefully one or two decent signings still to come. I wouldn't mind us finishing 7th again; if we get closer to the teams above us, that's progress. The improvement I really want to see is taking points off the teams above us more often. Do that, confidence grows and we're making progress.

Spending £150m should have helped improve the first team. At the moment I honestly don't see too much improvement in the first 11. Better squad? Yes. Better first 11 I'm not so sure
