How did you become an Evertonian?

My dad’s a Tranmere fan, but when I was a kid mum and dad both worked, and I used to spend most week days with my mum’s parents who lived a stone’s throw from Goodison - my grandad went to Gwladys Street School as a kid. He was a rabid Evertonian.

My first Everton memory is of us signing Tony Cottee in 88 (which is bloody frustrating considering what happened 12 months earlier).

I was very excited at us breaking the British transfer record, but my grandad didn’t rate Cottee, so he made me a deal. He said he’d give me £1 every time Cottee scored, and £5 if he ever scored a hattrick.

One debut hattrick later and as a 6 year old in 1988, I was basically rich.

6th February 1958, I was 3 and I told my brother, who was 5 that I wasn’t going to support Man united any more because they had no players left. He said you can’t support Liverpool because I support them you’ll have to support Everton! I have 2 brothers, a sister, wife, numerous nephews and nieces and all in-laws who are all reds, Never regretted it, (well maybe the last few games last season).

As a little wool the catchment area was either follow my Dad (Man U) or choose between Everton and the RS. I much preferred the colour Blue and every RS I knew seemed like a bit of a bell.

I do remember previously being quite enamoured with QPR and Sheff Wed after seeing them on the TV - must have been the blue or maybe their comparatively elaborate names. Swerved two bullets there.

None of my family were interested in football (though my sister became a red in later years). I loved football and my preferred team was QPR as I saw Rodney Marsh play on the telly and thought he was the bees knees. My best mate was an Everton supporter and I went with him to my first match in Sept 1973 EFC v QPR, Everton won 1-0 with a Mick Lyons goal and I came out of the ground an Evertonian - going to as many games after that that I could afford.
