Holgate Racially Abused By Firmino - The Guardian

Surely the referee hear everything considering he was stood right in front of Firmino when he said it ?

I think he was Lost in the moment, with the players shouting and the fans going mad (it was infront of our end)

If he didn’t hear something then I’d like to not see him ref at the top level again.

Hoping that Holgate has misheard something here to be honest because nobody wants this to be a part of our game. Disgusting if true.

Yes, it is. If you sit around a pub and say 'negro' to a friend and everyone laughs about it though still a weird thing to say isn't comparable to storming full speed towards someone visibly angry and have no reason for pointing out anyone's ethnicity.

The use of the word is wrong in that context as well, and if my friend said it and others laughed, I’d be challenging them about it. People joke about race or homosexuality etc with friends, and this makes it seem allright, but it isn’t ever. It just leads to more people thinking it’s ok and when people do challenge it, they are seen as social justice warriors. People are too complicit with things. If we want real change and progress, it has to be challenged at any level.

I think he has actually just absolutely bottled it and rather than make a massive headline grabbing decision - which IF it was shown he himself misheard would have ended his career as a ref - he has decided to play the see no evil hear no evil card. and let it be sorted out post match when he off the hook responsibility wise.

As the referee was so pro Liverpool last night, he'll have heard what we wanted to hear. If he says he didn't hear anything and cameras prove something was said, he won't be punished. He has the safest job in the world.

I mean for a Brazilian to say something racist is a little strange. Especially when if you go back to other racism cases there is a definitive factor between the two party's, Suarez and evra for example .

I just don't understand that with similar skin tones what he would say that would be racist

Think slavery was a big thing is Brazil

What I love about these threads, it is like a light to moths.

It pulls the kopites in " we have to defend our player "

The best one was the Saurez bite on Ivanovic. He never bit him one said, he just rested his teeth on his arm. But, he was serious not joking.

Holgate was wrong to push him, what happenened next I'm not sure so i can't see how people will defend him in hope more than anything else.

They are a strange lot to say the least but experts in South American cultures.

There's been a very serious allegation made here. If the word in question was used in any other area of employment you would be sacked. So that's why it's important there is a thorough investigation. No one is saying firmino is definitely guilty, but nor should anyone be brushing it under the carpet.

If firmino is guilty he should be sacked. If Holgate is making a false allegation he should receive a lengthy ban. It's serious.

Agree 99%. Although I cannot agree that “no-one is saying firmino is definitely guilty”- look at the title of this thread as a starting point. Countless comments declaring that he’s a racist and definitely used one of, if not the, worst racial slur’s in language. The video footage available so far doesn’t prove he said anything of the sort, but importantly it doesn’t prove innocence either as the kopites seem to desperately and vehemently believe. Right now, nobody truly knows. Except of course perhaps Firmino and Holgate.

Therefore whether people like it or not, there has to be an official investigation because of an ALLEGED racist remark. That’s it right now. Nothing more to it than that. We all know he plays in red and is a massive weapon but proper procedure still has to be followed. Whether you trust the FA on that is another matter.

When Suarez called Evra 'blacky blacky blacky' and grabbed his arm, Dirk Kuyt was stood right next to them and didn't react at all.

It's hardly outrageous to assume the ref/other players didn't hear/notice as he stopped paying attention attention to them 2 going at each other
