Looks like he was taking a sleeping pill called 'Ambien' in the U.S and 'Stillnox' over here.
Its perfectly legal but these pills are friggin mental. I dont condone drug use at all, and its proven that there was no illegal drugs.

You can still abuse legal drugs. Using in any manner other than directed is a violation of Federal Law, and technically punishable and US Code....etc etc.
Apparently (according to the wife) He did a magazine interview last week where he said he had to take sleeping pills to assist in sleeping because of the stresses and turmoil of filming The Dark Night. Then Christopher Nolan (the director) has said he is a fantastic actor and really got into character for the role and was jittery and edgey on set. Couple that with 18 hour workdays it is easy to see why he went to sleeping pills.
