The connection with the traditional folk song, 'Johnny Todd' circa 1890, has been mentioned a few times, and has links to the Port Of Liverpool. The docks had an enormous importance for world trading around that time, hence the TV series adopting the tune for the Z Cars programmes.Under what circumstances would it be acceptable for that song to be played at Goodison.
Our team comes out to the theme from a 1960s cop show that we share with Watford (?). Grand old team gets an airing quite a few times and not just on the terraces, on the tannoy, quite a few other clubs use that too. Playing devils advocate like.
A question if I may, was the area that the series was based around called Newtown in the programme? I'm not sure if that was the area which became to be known as Skemersdale. Perhaps somebody could enlighten me.
At the time, because regionally based programmes were quite unusual, many clubs around the country adopted Z Cars as their anthem.
As you state, why Watford still use it is a bit strange, but who knows, it could be 'fan power'. I think the only other club to use it up until recently was Sunderland. Again i could be wrong, so feel free to put me right on that one.
