Transfer Rumour Guido Rodriguez

These days, £20m for an experienced, talented CDM is fine. He's only just turned 28 not 38.

I'd spend £20m on a 28-year old Fernandinho.
I honestly don't know enough about him but I don't think it would be a good call. We just spent 20m on a 28 year old Allan.

Yeh, to play him in a role he hasn't done. Allan is a good player just not in the right system.
That's fair but even then his legs are going and he's not staying fit.

I just think this team is so far away from top half level that you've got to try and find guys who can be helpful 3 or 4 years from now too. And this dude might be but the percentages are lower.

Well I'm more worried about how we perform in the next 1-2 seasons, I'd drop £20m to help our survival. I understand your point but also think you're looking at players maybe 2 years younger than you should worry about.

I don't like investing in a 28 year old, but traditionally, most number 6s play until they're a bit older.

The lack of re-sale is a concern, but if you could get 3-4 quality years out of a player like this, who would provide the anchor during a rebuild, then I think that is a quality investment.

Gareth Barry was still dictating play at 33/34.
We need quality at DM more than resale value. He could play well into his 30s with good technique, like a Fernandinho.

That's why I said too. I still believe we can do both. Find someone to contribute now who might hang on to that level awhile.

I know it's a different situation but back in the day there was a lot of "buy guys who can get us into Europe now and go from there." But that leaves you screwed if it doesn't go exactly right.

As some have mentioned before, Betis are in pretty bad financial shape and have recently been hit with UEFA ban for FFP, etc. €40m is not happening. I bet somewhere in the range of €18-22m would get this deal done assuming we don’t try and pay with IOUs for 5 years

I'd bet 20m with 5-10m down the line would make it an easy yes from Betis.

I like this rumour its not an obvious one and he looks to have physicality and distribution. Can we afford it I hope so.

For me, daft as it sounds it just depends how good he is. If they've identified him as the target for what they're looking for in that role and are happy that he can do all the things he needs to be able to do then I can accept paying decent money for him. I do have an issue if they've worked their way down a list and are just seeing him as an option that they may be able to get over the line. Allan was just a rank bad signing, it was clear by about his 3rd game that he couldn't do the job we'd seemingly earmarked him for which is unforgivable really. I'd rather we didn't sign players in this age bracket at the moment but if we do we need to be absolutely certain that they're what we need.

*Just to clarify i'm talking about if he was in the £20m bracket here, spending £30m+ on a 28 year old just has to be a hard no in our position at the moment.

Fixed that for you mert.

If we spunk 40 Mill on him the only thing he will impact is the bench or the treatment table - and you know it.

Edit; yeah he  Could be the best player ever for us and I'll be really pleased - but how likely is it
Isn't it 40m euros so that means it's closer to 38m we can also try and reduce that and spread the costs over his contract

Yeah and this highlights the difficult position the club is in. If you invest in someone with little resale value, you're playing the same dangerous game that got us into this mess. But on the other hand, the money is very, very well spent if it keeps us up. The prospects who can come in and make a big immediate impact are going to cost an arm and a leg and/or be on the radar of much better clubs. The model we need to get to is being able to sell a Richarlison for 60m and then invest in two high potential 20m players mixed in with someone in their prime. There's really no good option unfortunately unless we find some money in the couch cushions. The CM situation is so dire that if they could make it work, I'd be on board.
