GOT Wrestle Fest Fan Thread

Yeah if I had to pick one Bret is more to blame. It's a job. A fake Championship job. And if his employer is telling him to lose he loses.

It's like an actor in a soap being told he's being cut from the show but changing the script to stay in it!

However, Vince could have been nicer about it all.

I watched it after watching the Eric Bischoff interview with JBL (a very good watch by the way) and he said he'd have done exactly what Vince did if it had been the other way round but was happy to take advantage of it all. Although Bret was never the same.
This basically, Bret was and still is a massive mark for himself. That doesn't make him less of an amazing wrestler but it's true. Dropping the title on your way out and 'doing the job' when you leave a company is just what's done. If Bret had just done the right thing the whole mess could of been avoided, he let his ego effect his judgment. I've never been one of Vince's biggest fans and Bret is one of my all time fav's but the facts speak for themselves and while Vince could of possibly handled the whole thing better Bret was the one at fault.
Bret did have the right to refuse to drop the title to Micheals in Canada as per his contract, but it was his ego that wouldn't let him even though it wouldn't have hurt his character at all to do so before debuting in WCW.

Was a real shame what happened though. Bret was one of my fave guys in WWE, WCW in typical WCW style completly wasted him, although his heart wasn't really in it (for obvious reasons).
Bret played a part in his failure while in WCW. Obviously the stupidity of WCW management played the biggest part but you could see right from the start that he didn't have the same fire he'd had while in the WWF. Yes he was booked horribly but sometimes it just felt like he was going through the motions.

Rumours are that Daniel Bryan will be returning on the European Tour and surely that's better than Cena.

Looks like Flair could be there and will be bevvied. Can't wait.

But Bret did have reasonable creative control in his contract and would have dropped the title to pretty much anyone else on the roster, even to Shawn Micheals. Just not in Canada.

He claimed it was because it was bad for his character, and i actually agree with that, the charatcer of Bret Hart the Canadian hero fighting against the bad Americans should not be losing to his biggest on screen rival in Canada at that time. Even if there had been a rematch due it was still a bad idea. But it was definitely Bret's off screen real life ego that didn't want to lose to Micheals in Canada because deep down he hated him.

So like i said earlier, i think Bret should have lost the title to Micheals at SS97 because it was simply business, a loss didn't hurt him anywhere near as much as he was leaving as it would have done if he was staying.

I think the best part of his time in WCW came when he was US champ and playing the subtl slightly comedic heel, which gave is this classic about the winner of the Lou Ferigno look-a-like contest:

Looks like Kurt Angle with a pony tail in that clip.

I agree Vince should of found sombodey else for Bret to lose to and thats shows stupidety on Vince's side. I totally agree ego's ruled the day back then but it annoys me that when Hogan, Nash or Hall used their creative control power their the devil! But Bret does it and he's a hero! I never bought into the idea it would of hurt Brets character to lose, he wasnt some fresh faced kid ffs, everyone knew how good he was. Bret is an old school wrestler and should of stood by the old school rule about doing the job on the way out. The idea that he was so worried about how it would effect his character only shows he's a little bit of a mark for himself frankly. As for not wanting to lose to Micheals because he didnt like the guy thats just daft imo as most people in life have had to at some point work with sombodey they hate (i know i have!). The way he clung onto the whole Canadien hero thing was a bit daft to, he would still get the hero reception regardless of a loss. Bret wanted win via DQ and then hand belt over on Raw the next night! That would of been a laughing stock considering the WWF was getting its ass kicked in the ratings at the time. Its all comes down to the fact that Vince thought he had no choice and he obviously regretted it (thats prob one the few professionnel things Vince really does regre) so i cant say i blame him for his actions.
I remember his US title run was fairly good. Prob his best WCW moment for me, was getting Goldberg to spear him when he wore the metal plate. Hé must of realised what idiots WCW management we're second he arrived when they wanted him to ne a guest ref on his first a ppv. Common sense should of told them they had a massivement money maker and used him as a main event draw for as long as he was white hot.

One thing about it.

Do you think if bret had left as champ and walked into wcw that bischoff wouldn't have ran that as his promo? reigning wwf champion walks out to join them? hasn't been beaten for that title etc. Vince to be fair couldn't take that risk. it would have been suicidal for him to have his champion jump ship.

That's kind of the point mate.
