GOT Wrestle Fest Fan Thread

Go on then! Can't resist another!

Here is the next episode in Smithy's look at old wrestlers that don't do it anymore.

This times featured wrestler is.......

Jake 'The Snake' Roberts

Real Name:Aurelian Jake Smith, Jr (Brilliant! He's a Smith, I might be related!)

The son of former wrestler Aurelian "Grizzly" Smith. He is best known by his ring name of Jake "The Snake" Roberts, and often brought snakes into the ring, including a boa constrictor named Damien and even a de-venomed cobra, named Lucifer.

Roberts is best known for his two stints in the World Wrestling Federation—the first between 1986 and 1992, and the second between 1996 and 1997—though he also wrestled in the National Wrestling Alliance in 1983, World Championship Wrestling in 1992. He's also featured in TNA, but not for long.

Throughout his career he was known for his intense and cerebral promos, his dark charisma, his extensive use of psychology in his matches, and has been credited as inventor of the DDT maneuver.

Roberts reckons that he got his nickname by copying Oakland Raiders quarterback Ken "The Snake" Stabler (of whom Roberts was a huge fan). I'm pretty sure I heard that he got in massive trouble from animal rights people for his rather rash treatment of the snakes!

Sadly, and not unlike a large number of wrestlers of the time he had major issues with drugs, but WWE paid for his reabilitation and last word that he was doing well.

He will always be known for bringing the real life snakes into the ring, his opponents acting scared, but in reality a large number had real phobias of snakes!

Me and my mates got Wrestlemania on ppv and watched it on the Monday night after work. I was sat there watching the Cena v Miz match and I began to think my eyes were deceiving me but after rewinding the match a few times I couldn't believe it, I could see a fan waving 'Old Glory' (An Everton flag) in the crowd. After a little snooping around the internet I found the lad on twitter and he sent me a photo of it.

A couple of years back at mania there was a 'Feed The Yak' sign about two rows from the front!

In fact here it is:

That's a pretty cool clip, some great moments in there... the two main times I was really into wrestling and got to watch it a fair bit was the late 80s/early 90s end of Hulkamania era, with Macho, Warrior etc, and then the attitude era; Stone Cold, the Rock, DX, Hardy Boys and Dudley Boys, Edge and Christian... good days :)

Like that Top Rope Challenge TE clip, that was pretty cool. Amazing to see SCSA and Booker doing that show, gives it some real weight behind it! :)

That brought a tear to my eye Cena! I miss the attitude era! Forgot how much until, like you, I started watching some youtube vids of the Rock etc from back then! Hate the pg rated raw at the moment

On the subject of old/attitude era wrestling, what's your fave match ever?

Mine: The Rock Vs. Hulk Hogan - Wrestlemania 18

My two faves ever going at it. The crowd was intense, sounded like they were shouting 'ROGAN ROGAN' all the way through as it was so split. Loved how Hogan was supposed to be bad at this point but older fans still loved him. You can see Rock shocked by the crowd reaction. Just amazing. I reckon I still watch this match and build up about twice a year now!

And the epic epic confontation:

Hate to say it but Rock Vs. Cena next year has no chance of living up to this.

By an honest to God mile this is my fave match ever. It was stunning. The atmosphere was amazingly; and the rivalry between Rock and Mick was phenomenal over the period of three or four months.
