Both Portland (which is already dealing with federal agents against the city's will) and Chicago (which appears to be Trump's next target, prompting Chicago's leadership to preemptively denounce the fed effort) are cities rich with connotations in the iconography of America's right wing. Portland's considered a cartoonish lefty-liberal-wacko town and Chicago is styled as a major center of the Trumpian "American carnage" narrative. (During Obama's presidency I lost count of conservative pundits' references to "thuggish, Chicago-style politics," meaning politics with a high level of African American participation.)

These cities are being used as showcases in the kabuki theater of rightwing paranoia.

Pity. I think people who parade in favor of Trump are misguided and physically unattractive but I like the way a boat parade allows you to maintain appropriate social distancing among large numbers of people.
