But security is much better than pre-9/11 as that was truly a completely undstandardized free-for-all. I remember (accidentally) bringing a bag of pot back in my shaving kit. The two early-20s “security” staff just laughed when they found it and waved me through; this was around midnight in LGA (I’m glad they did, obviously).
The reality though even now in the UK at least Is airport security aren’t looking got stuff like weed . They’ve private security , monitored by the DoT , who are there to swab for the explosives and xray for weapons etc . If they find drugs or cash they might alert the bizzies , as if their protocol and they’re diligent , but ultimately it’s not their aim .

Airport security in the UK is under say G4S on less money than a delivery driver .

I was amazed when I went to the UK 15 months ago. I was joking with my wife I could have brought a brick of sweet Colombian intro the country - I literally didn’t have to talk to anyone I just walked off the plane thru customs without ever encountering anyone. We were floored

I mean customs (border force ) , different than G4S do stop people but mostly to try and catch them with 300 pouches of golden Virginia

It’s even worse on the Eurostar, there literally are no checks on the destination side of the line.

Though that is pretty much the case returning back to the USA as well, no? I've never once had my bags looked at by customs at Dulles airport...occasionally there is a cute sniffer-dog that will roam around, but I'm not sure if they are looking for food or drugs. I imagine the "x-ray/image" screening of checked luggage at the departure airport suffices for customs.

An interesting side-note: my partner flew back from India via Dubai and said the US has a full customs/visa service in their airport, so you go through the visa/customs stuff on their side and when you land in the US you can just leave--no passport check or anything. If you've ever flown back into Dulles, this is huge as the lines for visa/passport screening are looooong and painful.

Mainly concerned with guns/knives in most places. Fairly easy to carry small amounts of drugs through airport security. It’s not something a lot of countries are concerned with… Not that I’m overly familiar with such matters

The e-gates at passport control have been an absolute game changer. Until 2019ish, I don’t know that I ever got to baggage claim faster than two hours after touchdown thanks to the queue to speak with a Border Force agent. Even then, they never actually searched your luggage. Just asked you a couple questions about what you were doing in the UK, possibly made you show proof you had a flight home booked, and then stamped your passport. But, since they brought the e-gates in, I’ve gotten to baggage claim faster than my bags every time.

You’re screened before your flight, and not allowed to leave the secured areas until you leave the airport at your final destination. It would really take some doing to collect any type of contraband after you’ve gone through TSA.
