it's definitely possible. Could someone have actually put out a contract hit on him in case he testified against even more powerful people?

in my mind that would happen in the shadows and not in the middle of Manhattan, but anything is possible i guess

that's possible but huge risk to whomever called the hit. there are enough ex military types in the US who could plan the logisitics that a single person is entirely possible as well

Oh for sure given he lived in Minnesota, though maybe my opinion is skewed by watching Fargo one too many times 😂.

I have very mixed feelings about this and haven't been able to figure them out yet, but I feel very strongly about these ideas:

Healthcare is a massive cost burden in the US, 25% of the federal budget on top of the cost to household budgets
Access to healthcare is a huge problem in the US and has been a frontline debate and will continue to shape as a debate
Most corporations have a very narrow view of purpose and it seldom extends beyonds delivering profits to shareholders
It's clear that murdering someone is not a solution to any problem; many people will feel very sympathetic to the murderer and not at all sympathetic to the victim
Very many corporate executives will take notice but not sure what this means

Healthcare and answering-to-corporate-share-holders more generally needs a massive revision. But I'm not sure how that process gets started, as people fail to vote in certain politicians who might initiate drastic health care changes; mainstream Dems (and Republicans) rely too much on corporate donations to initiate drastic changes.
Sadly, I suspect this shooting will lead to (more) corporate growth in private security firms who accompany CEOs/board members on all public outings, etc., but I don't think it will lead to any soul-searching among CEOs who then initiate revised policies to benefit the "have nots." I'd love to be wrong on this last point.

It's a bit of a hail mary effort for it being a solo individual. He had to be at just the right time and place, armed quietly, and covered his tracks up to the moment and escape, and his target had to be sure to be accessible. Perhaps the deceased regularly used that hotel and had been spotted earlier and then was laid in wait for. Maybe.

United Health Care is one of the worst in denying claims, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield just announced they weren't going to pay for the full duration of anesthesia for long operations in some states (<--just let that sink in). All because of corporate greed. Yet people are in the street protesting against the ACA. It's crazy.
That is insane

I think I read that the hotel he was shot outside of was where the investor meeting was taking place so I imagine it wouldn’t be too difficult to find out that information.

this is the graphic I saw floating around yesterdayView attachment 284732
Picking at a nit - there's no way that this graphic is accurate. Given the market dominance of United, Anthem, BCBS, Aetna and Cigna, there is no way that KP, Oscar and Ambetter have enough covered lives and claims to result in a 16% industry denial rate average. There are other errors in the chart methodology, but then I'm getting a little too deep into my work life geekiness.

yeah, I wondered the same as well; thought maybe medic-are/aid are included also but not listed, although these aren't available on the marketplace.

“The words "deny," "defend" and "depose" were carved into shell casings found at the scene, police sources told ABC and the New York Post. A New York City Police Department spokesperson would not comment on the report.

The words evoke the title of author Jay Feinman's 2010 book critical of the insurance industry entitled "Delay Deny Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It." Feinman, a professor emeritus at Rutgers University Law School, declined to comment.“

Gotta wonder how the NYPD allocate time and resources to this case compared to other shootings in the city.

You would think what would motivate a person to do such a thing. And the reaction was not what I expected as there seems to be real anger at the way the US for profit healthcare system operates. Reading some tweets that are truly shocking.

Yep. Even if it’s not happened to you specifically, every Yank knows and fears this. Hospital bills are so outrageous, you can easily get a $3k+ for one uncovered night at the hospital. A major procedure or a prolonged stay can run you $30k.
