TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Republican Party of Florida suspended Chairman Christian Ziegler and demanded his resignation during an emergency meeting Sunday, adding to calls by Gov. Ron DeSantis and other top officials for him to step down as police investigate a rape accusation against him.

Ziegler is accused of raping a woman with whom he and his wife, Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler, had a prior consensual sexual relationship, according to police records.

"Christian Ziegler has engaged in conduct that renders him unfit for the office," the party's motion to censure Ziegler said, according to a document posted on the social media platform X by Lee County GOP Chairman Michael Thomason.

Ziegler tried to defend himself during the closed-door meeting, but the party board quickly took the action against him, Thompson said.

"Ziegler on soap box trying to defend himself, not working," Thompson posted before confirming the votes.

The party's executive committee will hold another vote in the future on whether to remove Ziegler.

The Sarasota Police Department is investigating the woman's accusation that Ziegler raped her at her apartment in October. Police documents say the Zieglers and the woman had planned a sexual threesome that day, but Bridget Ziegler was unable to make it. The accuser says Christian Ziegler arrived anyway and assaulted her.

Christian Ziegler has not been charged with a crime and says he is innocent, contending the encounter was consensual.

The accusation also has caused turmoil for Bridget Ziegler, an elected member of the Sarasota School Board, though she is not accused of any crime. On Tuesday the board voted to ask her to resign. She refused.

The couple have been outspoken opponents of LGBTQ+ rights, and their relationship with another woman has sparked criticism and accusations of hypocrisy.

In addition to DeSantis, Republican Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz and Florida's Republican House and Senate leaders have all called for Christian Ziegler's resignation.

Also they're trying to oust his hate-filled wife from the school board, which would be a wonderful side effect.

She should be fired from her job because she's terrible at a threesome?

No, she should be fired because the school system's English teachers aren't teaching kids how to avoid vague pronoun references that let me make a joke like that one.

Ok, help me with this as my English skills were learned after schooling :dodgy: and aren't great. This headline could be written better, right? It was driving me insane.

I've seen worse headlines. On occasion, I think they're deliberate clickbait to make people resolve the ambiguity.

My eleventh grade English teacher would have handed it back covered in red ink, mind. "Which one is dead? Is this a seance?"

Wonder if he included this in his list of debts? (I know its a parody account, but it's fun)

Of all the amazing things the GOP has done over the last 5 to 10 years or so, the most hilarious, without a doubt, was the Four Seasons debacle.

I mean it was essentially an SNL skit.

Pure gold

It was legitimately one of the funniest things that’s happened in my lifetime. I’m not sure even SNL could have dreamed up something so ridiculous.

It still boggles my mind that they went through with it. Clearly, there was a point in time when they realized they booked the wrong venue and could have just made up an excuse that the press briefing was canceled and few would have known it was the wrong booking (it would mostly be a non-story)…but they didn’t.

Also, why doesn’t the obscenely wealthy DNC spend a bit of money making a commercial about this and get it out on the streets. It’s such an easy one to script and it could turn a few centrists.

More generally why are the Democrats so #%€£*^ bad a campaigning? Start hammering away at Dobbs right now!

Internal strife. The problem with being the actual "big tent" is that the platform is pulled in ten different directions. Then, you have the fact that every seat in the Senate and House differs with respect to that gravitational pull. They're all fighting with one another over their own electoral prospects when it comes time to put a platform together. Some of them want to hammer Dobbs, or any given line item, more than others.

Will Rogers is still right all these years later. "I am not a member of any organized political party. I am a Democrat." The above is why.

The Republicans win (the presidency) this way:

and I wish I were joking. When they run a party median candidate for the presidency like Bush 41, Dole, McCain or Romney, they tend to lose. When they run the sort of populist candidate Living Colour describes, the Republicans tend to win.
