The Ed Whelan theory has become the “logic” that many senators have based their vote on - I’ll believe you right up to the point where it becomes politically awkward for me to do so.
Getting control of the SC was the main aim of most republicans here.
First they stole Garlands seat,
Then they ignored foreign meddling to get their reality tv President elected
Then they conferred his nomination of a justice who lied with ease under oath.
Now they control all 3 branches of government.
People, including some on here, are quite happy to sacrifice the dignity of this country to get what they want.

It is absurd - though not as much as pinning all your hopes on an allegation from thirty years ago instead of the easily verifiable facts that Kavanaugh lied to Congress, repeatedly. FFS they were actually hoping a four day FBI investigation that didnt even speak to the victim or the suspect would get to the bottom of this.
Honestly until the Dems are purged, there really are no grounds to believe they could ever stop Trump never mind the far worse successor that is no doubt barrelling down Hell's own doom chute as I type this.
The next step is to realign constituencies borders after the census to ensure a continuous GOP dominant electoral force.
It's also worth remembering that the presidents (who lost the popular vote by 3m) nomination will be approved by 51 senators who represent 120m Americans and opposed by 49 who represent 180 million Americans.

I’m very open to the idea that Dems messed this up but what actions do you think they could have taken that would have got several Republican senators to care enough about those lies when it is in their own self interest (and relection hopes) to pretend they didn’t exist or were “white lies”? They don’t appear to care about Trump’s lies, his taxes or his Access Hollywood tape either.
Edit For instance I thought Pat Leahy laid out a convincing case even prior to Dr Fords testimony https://www.leahy.senate.gov/press/100418kavanaughtweetthread , but it didn’t seem to influence anyone who was on the fence.

Not sure why you are always so quick to blame the Dems/left for what is wrong in American politics.
There is literally nothing more they could do at this point to stop this from going forward. Republicans are ramming this through before the mid terms.

I agree about Leahy - but his argument should have been the one that was pushed, the one that was in the media every day, the one that commentators fought over - for a start, it is demonstrably true and more importantly it went directly to the suitability of Kavanaugh for the role in question. Then there is the fact that was Leahy who came up with it, a man who is probably the least wrong of any Democratic Senator currently serving.
The problem is that it wasn't, and it wasn't because the top of the Democratic Party is absolutely useless. Who prefers to run with an allegation like that, which could never have been proved and for which they (the GOP) would never have accepted proof of, rather than something that they already had in their hands?
They get blamed because this has all happened under their watch, with no evidence that they have learned how to stop it. To quote Leo Amery quoting Cromwell - "You have sat too long here for any good you have been doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!"
