No, it was around eleven o'clock right before going to bed, and the PCs were all off. Scared the living daylights out of us for a few seconds, and then it was just funny. Easy problem to solve, too. Just unplugged the thing and went to bed.

It was really early in Chromecast's run, before they put decent security protocols in. You could get into WiFi that way back then (as well as through most 'smart home' devices), which I learned when I did a little research the next morning. These days, you have to be connected to the WiFi to 'see' the device.

The workaround was to only plug the stupid thing in when I wanted to throw something over to it.

A lot of smart TVs still have similarly rubbish security protocols, unless you turn off WiFi and plug it into the network through the LAN. That's probably how this one happened.
