As always, candidate quality matters.

The entire world has gone mad.
It's been barking mad for a while now. Todd Akin's "legitimate rape" comments that punted a Senate seat to McCaskill were made back in 2012. These things just happen more frequently of late, because people weren't paying attention to the canaries in the coal mine.

This whole abortion situation is so disappointing and surreal when you understand that it is happening in the States. We can all frown and hope that women in the likes of Iran can be given full rights as the world should demand but these bills and supporting senators, Jeez! I have said it before in here but the lovely ladies of the USA should put a blanket ban on sex with men and see how long these fellas maintain their position.

Like any group of people, they will have quislings, and those will tend to be attracted to wealth and power because that's just how that one is. Any movement that depends on a blanket boycott to achieve success is doomed to failure. If the objective can be achieved with a substantial participation rate, that can work.

It's preposterous that we should have states outlawing medical necessary procedures or denying access to abortion to pre-teen rape victims because, to borrow George Carlin's pejorative language, a sky god told them so. It's worth pointing out that Todd Akin served six terms in Congress in a relatively moderate Republican district with comparatively educated voters before an accidental moment of candor (which he later doubled down upon) sunk his candidacy.

The problem essentially was that he started from the presumption of guilt rather than innocence when it came to the hypothetical of a woman falsely claiming rape for the purposes of gaining access to an abortion. There is actually some small amount of science to back up where he then went with those comments, as he claimed, but he obviously didn't understand the difference between statistically significant and substantive effects in research. The net result was that he ended up intimating that women seeking an abortion are a bunch of hussies who will say or do anything to get out of the consequences of their actions. I don't know, maybe those are the sort of women that a slightly funny-looking congressman ends up dealing with on a regular basis when it comes to a little action on the side, but it doesn't follow that all or most women are like that.
