Why would the GOP lawmakers make such a controversial law and end up jeopardizing their future prospects of being elected and pissing the electorate off by making this law?

Possibly seeing cracks already. Prior to the SCOTUS refusing to stay the new abortion law in Texas, the Texas Politics Project did some polling 8/20-30. For only the second time in his seven-year tenure, Gov. Greg Abbott has net negative polling and the gap this time is far larger (11pts v 2pts back in April - first polling after the snowpocalypse shut down the energy grid) with a majority disapproving. In fact, it is the equal of Biden's net negative polling in Texas. Perhaps even more telling is that for the first time in 12 years of asking this question in polls, a majority of Texans responded that the state is on the wrong track.I can only hope this new Texas law backfires on the GOP nationally, as abortion was only a massive issue to rally up the base even though they knew they could never get it overturned - it’s a much better issue to run on being pro life when nothing can be done (just complaining) than when they actually get their way
Now that it’s effectively overturned in Texas, and other states plan to follow suit, I can only hope the backlash is swift
No doubt now (if there ever was any doubt) that the 2022 midterms will have record turnout
When your 6yr old is murdered in school by a psychopath who used a Remington gun, it's obviously very important to determine if your 6yr old was ever absent from school or acted up in class...FFS
Hey listen, I'm as liberal as the next guy, but I'm pretty sure I'd want ballistic fannys well regulated!
