Yes, it is. But I'm told I just need to sit down and listen to these people so I can understand them.

A big ol' chunk of them were (rightly) wailing about the rights of women in Afghanistan in the last week. Nary a damned peep from them about this affront to women's rights here in the good ol' US of A.
yup, I'm done with the 'sit down and listen' nonsense.
I tried that with "Hillbilly Elegy" and look how that turned out.
In 13 years living in the states I haven't convinced one person (even on here) to moderate their right wing views.
So now I just use places like this to vent while working to get out the vote here in MA.
Trying to raise awareness among the disinterested is far better for your mental health than trying to make a right wing christian see sense.
A bit of a ramble but I'm thinking of you and my family and friends in Texas today. Cant be easy.

It's all you can do, mate, and thank you for your efforts. Like you, I try to remember that our democratic republic is not a given. We have to fight for it.

Ramble on and your thoughts/concerns for us folk down here are appreciated.

It's worse than backward. It's unleashing Soviet-style culture in the United States. Let me explain...

If I find out my neighbor took a taxi to an abortion provider I can sue my neighbor, the taxi driver, the clinic where the abortion was performed and the medical provider and receive up to $10,000 in compensation from the State of Texas if the abortion was performed after six weeks of pregnancy.

If I find out the same taxi driver took my neighbor to the Federal Building where my neighbor commits an act of terrorism - no such ability to sue or receive compensation.

Nor should there be. In either case. Except for the American Taliban (Evangelical white people) losing their goddamn minds.
They’ve long since lost them. I remember my brother coming home from some church function in the days or weeks after Hurricane Katrina, and talking about how their youth pastor had spent the evening telling this group of impressionable 13 year olds that the hurricane had been a judgement sent by God and that the wicked people of New Orleans to gotten what they deserved for turning their backs on him.

Fair enough. The Evangleists have been calling natural disasters God's Judgement on immorality for a long time.

But this is law. Soviet or Taliban-style tell the state about the wickedness of your neighbor kinda stuff.

It's lunacy.

Motion to expel the Republic of Texas from the union for un-American activities. All in favor, say 'aye'.

The irony is that we really can't win here. It's obviously wrong, yet the 10th Amendment is a thing.

That'd be a nay vote here, good sir.

The 10th Amendment may indeed be a thing but given abortion has national interests on multiple levels the Federal Government is right to weigh in.

Saw a funny earlier... POTUS should name all medical personnel "privacy protectors" and grant them qualified immunity.

Is the $10K from the state of from the person/business?

They don't see it as women's rights.

That is the problem when right wing rhetoric gets intertwined with religion. You are literally competing with God in the eyes of these people.

I think in the UK we don't fully comprehend how intertwined religion is with a lot of the politics in certain US states as we don't really have that here to anywhere near the same degree, at least not to the levels of the creationist/evangelical nut jobs you have over there.

I remember speaking to people from the US on an atheism forum I used to frequent several years ago, who had been outright disowned from their families or even physically attacked for turning their backs on religion. Used to blow my mind that things like this still happen in the developed world.

I don't know how a lot of them can say the old 'Love thy neighbor' spiel with a straight face anymore tbh.

Mine are 100% on board with it....

Someone on here is going to have to adopt me because I am soon not going have a family
