Ireland has 13 parties to choose from.

The problem is though the current system here doesn't suit more than two. It's geared to too and anyone else that has tried was ridiculed.

I would love to see this country move out of the dark ages and get with the program and have more choice.

I just think it will be hard for any third party to be given a shot. Especially by the media when it comes around to election time.

The rules on donations and contributions have to be curbed too. It's ridiculous the amount spent by politicians on advertising

The only difference in Ireland is that both parties are so malleable and interchangeable, voting for one isn't voting for an inflexible political philosophy. They both tend to keel over under any sort of public pressure and, as a result, we do get things done and ideas do get advanced, albeit slowly. Added to that, the other parties still have a stake in government and can actually influence decisions

The US is literally pick a lane, shout about communism and watch as the decision-making apparatus does absolutely nothing as a whole menu of obvious social and economic problems swell to uncontrollable proportions

It will be difficult, but the appetite certainly there among the public.

The survey found Americans' favorable opinion of the Republican Party has declined to 37%, while 48% view the Democratic Party positively. The poll also shows 50% of U.S. adults identifying as political independents, the highest percentage Gallup has ever measured in a single poll.

Majority of Republicans Now Favor Third Party

Independents are usually much more likely than Republicans or Democrats to favor a third political party, but in the current poll, Republicans are nearly as likely as independents to hold this view, 63% to 70%. That represents a dramatic shift for Republicans since last September when 40% favored a third party.

Which is great. It's badly needed.

I just hope the politicians that want change see this and take initiative.

I had really hoped on the left Sanders would have done this. He had the best opportunity.

On the right they have so many different opinions when you cut through the bs that it's surprising they all want to be lumped in with the insanity, racism and downright scum that operate there.

They could easily split that party into 3 or 4.

I agree the current system doesn’t fit more than two. That’s why to change the two party system what we really need to begin is with campaign finance reform.

Ever since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision our political system has become even more corrupted and dysfunctional than ever before. In the past four elections, super PACs raised nearly $5 billion in unlimited contributions to spend in federal elections. And about a billion of this money came from only 10 donors, those are the people really in control of our government. So these individuals and their super PACs want to make sure all this money supports the two party system and their candidates as it easier to manipulate. All this dark money is what is really stopping us from having a better political system and stopping other parties from forming.

Our country needs to find a way to assist with the financing of candidates at least at the federal level. Developing a small donor public-matching funds system could be a good solution and one that Congress is already considering. The House already passed H.R. 1, a legislation that is addressing issues such public-matching funds, non-disclosure of large donors, gerrymandering, voter disenfranchisement, and many other issues that are affecting our political system from being fair and transparent. As of right now the law has 47 sponsor in the Senate so at the moment it doesn’t seem it has a chance to pass but if we are going to change the political party landscape of our country then we first need to provide the public financing to support and empower congressional candidates outside the two party system.
