Once again Republican governors are jeopardizing getting this pandemic under control, they are such a morons. It really makes no sense. When Abbott announced a statewide mask mandate. On that Thursday, July 2nd, there were 7,434 new Covid-19 cases in Texas and 44 deaths. Yesterday, there were 8,140 cases and 129 deaths.
It’s still a problem everywhere Sass. 5 of the top 7 states for new covid cases/100k on the 7 day average trend are run by Democratic Governors. The other two are South Carolina and Georgia. This is a really really stupid move by Abbott, but it’s not as simple as saying Republicans governors are causing the problems. None of them have figured it out except maybe Hawaii which has a pretty clear advantage in terms of containment.

I dont believe she or anyone is saying GOP governors are causing the COVID problem, rather the tendency of GOP governors and the previous GOP Administration to dismiss or deny the recommendations of the scientific and medical community has made the challenge of containing COVID more difficult.

That message spills over to ALL the states as there are plenty of folks in every Blue state who are adherents to GOP messaging.

Yes, messaging matters, and by in large the Republicans have been the worst in that aspect. But the same criticism goes for Newsom and the Pelosi dinner before she backed down after getting called out. This move by Abbott is the worst thing I’ve seen in a while though. I’ll grant you that.

You'll not get a defense of stupid, left or right, from me.

The elected political leadership in Texas is bloody awful. Governor Abbott, Lt. Governor Patrick and Attorney General Paxton... all [Poor language removed]. Or as we say around here, useless as tits on a boar hog.

They’ve apparently literally learned nothing in the year we’ve been fighting this virus. The moment that case numbers start to go down, they assume the pandemic must be over, and remove any mitigation techniques that got the numbers trending in the right direction in the first place. Then 3-4 weeks later they’re right back where they started, or oftentimes worse.
It is so frustrating because we could probably be in a much better place had our country been more uniformed about mandates and mitigation techniques that have proven to slow down transmission. Some politicians just wanted a quick fix but still don't understand that their strategies have not worked well so far.

I'm not claiming that states run by Democracts are doing better when it comes to Covid cases but their messaging has been much better than Republicans who have been awful. My main issue with Republican governors and the GOP in general is that they politicized the pandemic and the mask mandate thus worsening rhe results this measure could have had and can still have slowing down infection rates. To me it is just foolish to remove all restrictions when we are so closed to having enough vaccines for the whole country. They are just jeopardizing our recovery for political gains.

Totally agree. Foolish is probably an understatement. Apologies, I misinterpreted your initial post.

The fact that there wasn’t anything resembling a national strategy for fighting COVID is the Trump administration’s biggest failure on the virus IMO. Leaving it completely up to 50 individual states to do 50 different things, yet still allowing people to travel freely between them was never going to work out well, and led to ridiculous stories like this one...
If someone 100 feet away from you isn’t being asked to make the same sacrifices to fight the pandemic that you are simply because they happen to be on the other side of an arbitrary line, of course it’s going to led to resentment and division. Plus, it effectively makes your sacrifice pointless.

Good deal. Things naturally just get lost in translation through this type of communication as well.
Definitely. Sometimes it is hard to tell the tone of a post and at times I even feel because of English not being my first language that things do actually get lost in translation.

I'm not one that get her feelings easily hurt and even when I do I can be very forgiven :)

Saying "one day...it's like a miracle...it will disappear" is up there too

We can try Spanish, but I promise you even after 5 years of taking it in school, your English is about 1000x better than my Spanish would be. I went to Spain a few years ago and did my best but thoroughly embarrassed myself when any conversation got beyond me just ordering food.

These moderate Dems are awful, quick enough to vote for huge defense budgets and massive tax cuts for the rich but want certain people to miss out on $1400 cheques. This could do long term damage to the party if all the big flashy promises are not kept.

Spanish GCSE here and im the same. I actually know quite a few of your basic words such as colours, body parts, months, days, animals, food, activities etc. All very random ones too but I would struggle to put an actual sentance together! I always mean to try and learn more but never get the time - admire bilingual/multilingual people.
