Some good, old-fashioned honesty.

Tying voting eligibility to income is one of the dumber takes I’ve heard in a while. In a lot of ways the system has failed people without an income, so they’re voting to change it so they can become less dependent. Sure, there are leeches, but I don’t believe that’s even close to the majority.

The only thing I’ve heard, not here, that I might be convinced on is raising the age minimum. At 18, for the most part I don’t really think people have experienced enough to really understand what their voting for actually means at a macro level. I’d wager the vast majority of 18-20 year olds have never even done their own taxes. I voted when I was 18, and looking back, I was extremely uneducated on the issues.

If we are okay with sending 18-20 year olds off to die and kill for their "country", they damn well can vote.

Edit: I'd also add most 18-20 year olds are working, paying taxes so we'd be back to taxation without representation if they are unable to vote.

The entire take is absurd, IMO. On the matter of being uneducated on the issues, you and I could go out on the streets and we will find citizens of all ages who are woefully uninformed. To my mind, that's not sufficient cause to restrict a Constitutional right as fundamental as participation in the democratic system.

If an 18-year old can sign up to kill or be killed on behalf of the country...

My sense is that, on the whole, political awareness is increasing among high schoolers relative to 30 years ago. So voting at 18 is just fine with me. I need to find some data to make sure I'm correct though.

I understand this perspective as it’s the default but I’m not sure who the we is. Perhaps this is also a problem? They’re also choosing to enroll here, not like it’s a draft. I’m just playing the devils advocate role a bit here as I dont think it’s that straightforward.

On your last point, should a 16 year old working at Burger King be allowed to vote as well? How about the 14 year old working a summer job? They pay taxes.

Edit, I did a quick search and it appears less than 50% of 18-19 year olds do actually work. Assuming school plays a big role there but I don’t have time to dig in.
