In a world of terrible opinions, Rand Paul stands out. As has been pointed out, this would make Osama Bin Laden, Charles Manson and Hitler innocent of any crimes. Bravo sir, bravo.
It is based on previous years filings though, those very same people could have lost one or both of their incomes during the pandemic. And incomes vary wildly based on state.
I expect it is also a negotiating position, the GOP are going to demand a haircut when it gets to the Senate so allowing some room for that to happen whilst still likely covering a lot of their voters in high cost blue states.
Unpossible.

That is indeed a concerning trend specially if we end up with lunatics such a Marjorie Taylor replacing these more moderate GOP members of Congress. As concerning is the health of Democratic senators such as Patrick Lahey and Dianne Feinstein who are getting so old and if something happens to them in the near future it could tip the balance of power in the Senate. Specially if something happens to Lahey whose Republican governor would be the one choosing his replacement.

What's also unpossible is having Ted show some cojones and stand up to Trump and the lies his lawyers are about to propagate during the impeachment trial. But what can be expected from Cruz who has never has had any cojones to stand up to Trump and instead ended up supporting the guy who claimed his daddy killed John F. Kennedy and his wife is ugly.

Scott seems like a reasonable GOP governor and he may follow through with his word. However given the current partisan environment I would not trust a Republican governor having to chose an interim senator. They would be pressured and pushed to chose someone from their own party or face the consequences.
Consequences from whom? He's a very well liked Governor in a state that isn't QAnon-crazed and has a tradition of even-handedness. Heck, even Republicans in VT like healthcare for everyone.
A special election to replace Leahy would have to take place within 6 months and something tells me Vermonters don't want to hand control of the Senate to a Southern turtle.
Yeah, i understand why they have to put a cut off somewhere to get out these checks, administratively they have to do something that's black and white, right? But in my opinion these checks also shouldn't be given to retirees, which of course would be a death knell politically. But if you think about the purpose of these checks, it's really to replace lost income for those who've lost jobs, have to work less hours in the pandemic, etc. Retirees still have their fixed retirement income. Those living off retirement accounts are way up post-pandemic. Can't they look at look at tax returns and if something like 90% of income is from social security/distributions from 401Ks they can't receive a check? This isn't an economic stimulus, assuming that money goes into the economy - it should be to help people survive.
These checks are just throwing money at the problem indiscriminately. I get something like that is easier to pass than structural changes, and I don't really have any better answers, but along your lines of thinking - these checks need to go to the people who need them most - not a couple making $150K.
Hence the issue I was having with whomever in January about how Biden and the Democrats can't afford to "play nice" anymore with Republicans because of the Overton Window shift. And I'm not saying go full on Norway(tho that would be super sweet), just that placating the right isn't getting anywhere. For some inexplicable reason the Republican party is going even MORE right than it has been. The people in charge seemingly know and are just not working with them anymore and introducing policy that is intended to help ALL Americans, not just the rich or the white or the male.
