Based on what we know now, I'd say it is slim.
But if more info comes out - like working with DOJ to oust AG for the specific purpose of tossing out election results - I think we might see more move to convict. Hard to argue his speech was hyperbole when he taking specific actions himself.

If the only reason they vote to convict him is to keep him from being able to run for office in 2024 I'd be more than OK wiht that as well.

Very slim indeed. It would be great if GOP senators would just listen to the evidence that's to be presented against Trump before calling the trial stupid like Rubio did on Sunday shows. Several GOP senators also expressed objections about the process and continued their claims that the process is unconstitutional. What's even more infuriating are claims by Rubio and others that going through the impeachment trial is like pouring gasoline on a fire. This attitude by Republicans is very disingenuous when they have been the ones that for years have been building the fire and for the past few months have throwing gasoline at it with their claims of election fraud. Now all of the sudden they are concerned about the fire and want to urge for unity, meaning letting Trump off. BS

So I wish I was more positive about it but Republicans give me no confidence about taking the right action when it comes to impeaching Trump and standing up for our country, but I sure hope I'm wrong.
 
I think the Democrats and some of you guys are missing the bigger picture. Biden beat Trump, so why are the Democrats and some of you wanting Trump not to run again ? He’s the best opponent you could have, because you already know that you have the numbers to defeat him. If the Democrats get him barred from running, the Republicans might just come up with a decent candidate......

Because biden won't be running in 4 years time. Why would you want to leave the door open to someone who has actively encouraged the far right to kill people?

Besides, if they don't impeach trump, it sends a message that you can attack democracy, stage a coup and disappear into the night with no consequences.

I feel like you are missing the bigger picture. Whether or not Trump will win is irrelevant. It's about holding ones actions whilst in office accountable. To say that whatever he did in office should be just waived away is inviting the next person to do worse. And, regardless of whether there are "the numbers" to beat Trump, his rhetoric and ability to absolutely bring out the worst on the right side of the political demographic is something we should say loudly is not allowed to have any ability whatsoever to cheat lie and steal his way in an attempt to win what he never should have had in the first place.

And that in itself is a concern. What if the far right put a more extreme candidate up to go toe to toe with trump and use him as a springboard, labelling him as too soft or, to use your phrase "finished"?

Half of America is fascist. They'd jump at the chance to up the rhetoric.

Not punishing Trump would make it far more likely that any politician, regardless of party or level, will claim fraud in any election they lost, refuse to leave office/accept the results and then run again as soon as they can.

Accepting the results of an election and handing over power is the bedrock of democracy, to make challenging that cost free will have even more dire consequences than the damage Trump has already managed to do,
