So the Governor of Arizona has pulled taxpayer incentives that were supposed to entice Nike to build a factory there because Nike pulled a pair of runners with a Betsy Ross US flag on them because Colin Kaepernick objected.
Welcome to America 2019
Unbelievable

So unless someone is actually beaten up you don’t believe they are threatened?

How hard is to say that no-one should use violence or intimidation?

I always condone violence, I just don’t believe it that event actually happened, if it did then those people should be rightfully dealt with by the enforcement authorities.

However, what I’ve read from the “tolerant” left is Andy Ngo being “roughed up” a bit (but not assaulted) I’ve read people condoning attacking people from the right. I read that moron AOC talking wham constantly, the Democrats fawning over themselves about who can be more left (over here Corbyn and his socialist dream world).

And what pisses me off is that I’ve always been a left leading voter for the past 30 years, but I can’t stand by and accept the BS that goes on now.

You’re just getting old Chris ;)

I think you might have meant condemn rather than condone? ;)

I am just more inclined to believe a report of intimidation about a group like Proud Boys as they have hardly taken the pacifist road - fwiw I would also believe the exact same report about Antifa from a right wing source. Reputations have consequences and I don’t think a ‘instantly dismiss as a lie because of the source’ is the best approach - I’m more in the ‘trust but verify” camp’.

Welcome to America 2019

Not to validate any politician's grandstanding on the news headlines, let's break down Kaepernick's argument.

When Betsy Ross made that flag, there were slaves in America. Therefore, that flag is racist. It also shows up at some right-wing rallies and makes some of us uncomfortable. Accordingly, it should be deplatformed. Fair enough?

Now let's get to the "if you know your history" part of the opposing argument.

Betsy Ross was a Quaker woman.
Quakers were possibly the earliest of Abolitionists. (Richard Nixon was raised by a Quaker woman too, just to tickle your irony meter...)
Quakers played a key role in banning slavery in England before they did the same in America.
Quakers were a key part of the Underground railroad that led thousands of slaves to freedom before and after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.

Nike sales outside of the USA being probably more important to their growth in stockholder value over the next quarter than patriotic American revenue isn't a proven fact, but it is my conjecture. They have clearly aligned with the anti-capitalist, counter cultural image that gives them a fresh shower of cool hipness to hide their never ending focus on their bottom line, their use of sweatshop labo(u)r in countries filled with people who are making more money than they ever did before making those shoes (doing a job that likely will never again be done in New Hampshire or Missouri) and their ever present stock price next quarter. This is a calculated move, and gives Kaepernick a chance at getting his face out there, as he won't take another snap in the NFL. All hail Nike.

Welcome to America 2019. "Who is using whom?" A smart Russian guy used that for a slogan about 100 years ago to great political success.

Betsy Ross being a Quaker (and therefore by extension the actions of Quakers) has little to do with anything though.

Personally I don't have a massively strong opinion on whether this flag should be in common usage (unlike the Confederate Flag, which is an altogether more clear-cut case) but it's interesting that so many on the Right have decided that their ire is best directed at Nike (a company who can do what they like) and Colin Kapaernick (can't IMAGINE why such people don't like HIM), rather than at the far right groups who've appropriated the flag for their own revolting purposes, thereby tarnishing its legacy.

EDIT: As a side note "patriotic American revenue" is a really weird way to phrase that. Seems to imply that 1) all patriots have a problem with Nike's decision or that 2) you're not a patriot if you don't have a problem with it.

Agreed, it is interesting. Is it informative? I see the inverse of your argument made daily on the right. Those who do not see the right's communications live in as much ignorance as those who do not see the left's communications. The problem, as I see it, is that the central area that was the forum for both sides to come to agreement has melted away like it was some cancer under the radiation therapy of the past twenty years of partisanship.

I suggest that the the missing element is any degree of trust of the proletarian left and right alike in the actions of the elite left or right to show them any degree of loyalty to anything other than money and the repping of their own sad careerist tendencies. Whether you are Dan Crenshaw or AOC, your connection with your followers is based on charisma and personality, rather than any considered view of what is best for America as a nation.

Fair enough if that's genuinely your opinion, but I just disagree. You (the royal you) can tout the "both sides" rubbish as much as you like, but one side is infinitely more "radicalised" than the other.

It's a world where the Right has decided that anything left of Fox News is considered "The Left" (see the NYT, CNN etc). There's plenty of "Centre" still out there, it's just that one party is infinitely closer to it than the other. When you've got one side calling the other "socialists" and even "communists" in some cases for thinking that everyone deserves a RIGHT to healthcare without having to worry about going bankrupt, it means that it can be hard to genuinely see the "Centre" even when you're staring straight at it.

Meanwhile on the right, you've got a media apparatus almost spontaneously combusting because someone referred to the detention centres as "Concentration Camps" and they've decided that's the biggest outrage ever - rather than focusing on "christ, what is happening there that could get someone even within a city block of referring to them as such?"

You make my point better than I ever could, Birk. Does everyone deserve a RIGHT to your labour without any consideration of your concern about being compensated for that labour? Who will conduct the triage for access to your labour and how will they be compensated for their labour?

Who will kill your cancer when you finally get access to that PET scan that will end all doubt? How long is the queue for that machine in your area? In mine, the queue is short and exquisitely organized and effective.

Not to quibble needlessly, but Quakers didn't play a key role in banning slavery in England - slavery was never legal in England, as Lord Mansfield found. It was legal in the Empire, which the Quakers (and others) effectively destroyed.

That's wonderful for you. Less wonderful for the third of the country that can't afford health insurance - or those who simply aren't eligible for it.

Most other "advanced nations" in the world manage to deal with your concerns by the way, in case you hadn't noticed - and they do it without people going bankrupt paying for their healthcare

Oh and fwiw (I added this in an EDIT because I was in two minds over whether to mention it at all - it really shouldn't be relevant), I work in a publicly funded healthcare system, and I get compensated for my work - thanks for your concern.
