Current Affairs General US politics (ie, not POTUS related)

It's so frustrating that she's been there 2 minutes and asked more worthwhile questions than most that have been there decades.

What's happened is that she hasn't succumbed to 'the machine' and acted how she should act. But she's done it in a good way, rather than the trashy way Trump did.

She's a very compelling voice and a future Presidential candidate. A breath of fresh air and highlights just how we have absolutely nobody like that in UK politics.

The question, of course, will be about competency in the long run, so we'll see.

AOC ?

I personally don't think she'll last too long in politics.

Read a bit of the Green New Deal, and it just will not be feasible to implement half of what is proposed.

If the Democrats are to challenge GOP/Trump at the next election they have to identify a couple of candidates. For how many are showing interest at the moment, I believe will likely be to there detriment.

That's only my opinion at the moment and I wouldn't put too much weight in it as I've not got as much knowledge of or passion with US politics ATM as many on this forum.

She won't contest the presidency this time round, perhaps next time.

As I said, it'll be a matter of long term competency - refining her ideas into practical, electable ones. However, right now it's about stamping your identity on the political landscape with big ideas and a consistent 'personal brand'; for me she's doing that well.

They said that about trump. He was a joke candidate that from the primaries until election night was given zero chance of taking the white house.

We're in the age of populism.

How many junior representatives get worldwide press attention? To boot, she's seemingly squeeky clean. They're having to get at her on policy, not personally. The problem is, more and more Americans are agreeing with many of the things she campaigned on.

She's also a gifted orator and gets social media. I've been impressed by how she's using everyman language to pick apart complex issues. This is essential.

Trump created this tsunami, but AOC could ride the waves he created.

She's 29. She can't run. She'll just about be old enough in 2024 (turning 35 just a month before the election). Realistically speaking, she wouldn't be a primary challenger until 2028/32 at the earliest.

She would be better getting time in the Senate before running for president. Maybe by 2036/2040 the usa will be ready for a minority, female, socialist Democrat in the white house... Maybe.

I think the world has changed towards 'reality show' politics. She could benefit from that if she is so prominent that she can't be ignored.

That said, I agree that 2028 is probably the better bet. And that's a long time in politics for things to change of course.

Based on current records, AOC being elected in 2028 would make her:

The first female president.
The first Latino president.
The first openly socialist-democrat president.
The youngest president.
The second Catholic president.

I genuinely like her. But all of these together make it unlikely for me.

While I agree the soap operatic twist in us politics has and will help her, it could also destroy her. Soaps need drama and twists.

I don't think anyone believes the GND will be enacted in its entirety, including AOC et al. It's more a line in the sand, a set of ideals and principles to move forwards with. And as THAT, I think it's pretty much on the money.

This is what i think the left do wrong most of the time. the right seem to aim to the extreme and get pulled back to something they're happy with whereas the left ask for what they're happy with then concede too much so it's a shadow of what it should be

Are there any fruitcake views in which elected American politicians don't believe ?
