Gareth Barry

Was really impressive how he broke up play yesterday. Definitely still capable of brilliant performances in that role.
Fair play to him, however, I put that down to playing alongside Tom Davies youth and who is more box to box and better attacking threat than Guaye, so Barry was having to be much more disciplined in the position of DM and left us less exposed. Better balanced and less being asked of Barry going forward.

Xabi Alonso retires. Another midfielder Grandad is clearly better than. Lampard Gerrard Alonso Scholes Xavi all felt they could no longer perform at the required level. Not our Gareth though, he's obviously got something all of them don't to be even older, still first team, and get a new contract. Wow.

Did you put this through google translate from Swahili Saint?

Every player is different both in terms of their longevity and the playing standards at which they decide they'd rather retire than carry on (relative to the standard they're currently at, we're not exactly Bayern, are we?)

Barry might be about 50 but he managed to have a cracking game against City just a few days ago, and put the likes of Toure to shame. If he still has that in the tank then I'd be annoyed if he retired now.

So please mate, wind it in and stop being a melon.

He should be well down the pecking order now IMO, hopefully his game time is minimal. Shame we gave him a new contract.

...I suspect Koeman is delighted to have him available for another 12 months. He's still the best at managing those tricky players who operate 'between the lines' (like Silva). I suspect he'll rarely start games but he'll be useful off the bench if Koeman is looking to close a game out.

I disagree, I think he gets to situations after they've happened time and again. I suspect his good games against City were more to do with them being his old club and him being well up for it, over any kind of ability as when we played the rs or any other side who uses that kind of player he's been found out.

His legs went years ago, and given he was never very mobile anyway, he's just surviving in games and dropping deep to make up another centre back instead of actually covering the ground his position should warrant. We look a far better side when we have players who can move in midfield. I personally think he should do a Phil Neville and hold his hands up and go.

..we'll have to agree to disagree, Ralph. Fabulous footballer.
