I haven't watched a second of this programme (I don't do magic and dragons, thanks), but basing a TV show on an incomplete series of novels is asking for trouble. Eventually the TV show will be generated by screenwriters rather than based on the book - where does the author go from there? What if they release the next book in the series and fans massively prefer the direction the book has taken? Will they refilm the TV series? Chaos.

I'm not one for magic and spells myself, I would say this is kept to a minimum in the series, and it plays out more as a historical epic, albeit of a fictional nature

As Walken said, it's not really that prevalent in the show, especially not in the first season. It's more about politics and dramatic intrigue between great characters. Oh and twists and turns, it's all about the twists and turns. You should watch the first 2 episodes, if you like those you'll enjoy the show.

Think this series takes us up to the end of the books an the next book probably won't be out until next year. It takes about a year to make the series which means they would've started on the next one already.

Martin must have an outline for the next book that they can work off and they haven't been following the books exactly anyway.
