He did kill his brother as well though. Not massively out of character.

This. He isn't a nice character at all. Killing his brother, spurning his wife, using black magic. He has killed innocents before.
It was hurriedly done, a bit of time showing him getting increasingly desperate would have made it more believable but less of a shock I guess.
