He's in a desperate position, and Melisandre is offering hope, however horrible. When Gendry was spared, he nearly lost everything on the Blackwater, so this was the cold, calculated sacrifice of a man who has been made to see himself as the reluctantly dutiful last hope for humanity against the long night. He is fulfilling the prophesy of 'lightbringer' in driving the metaphorical sword through the heart of his only love. That said, it would have been ultimately rad if he burned himself for the Lord of Light, handed command to Davos and the future to clever Princess Shireen.
