Game Of Thrones: Season 8

I dont know how I feel.

GOT was always about being a surprise and keeping you on your toes. I think it did that and even though it isnt maybe the ending we all wanted or thought of it was a bit of a surprise.

There’s surprises which have some logical grounding- the red wedding and Ned’s execution are perfect examples of this. They were shocking moments but when you look back you can trace a clear course of action that led to those moments.

The “surprises” this season have been shocks because they are borne from lazy, uninspired, illogical writing- otherwise known by defenders of the show as “subverting expectations”. This image sums it up for me.

Laughable, they didn't even try this year. coffee cups on set like that and nobody spots in and gets rid. No way does that happen even last season.FB_IMG_1558348201598.webp

It's the only way it could have ended when I think about it. Given where they'd taken all the characters.

George RR Martin said the ending is like the end of the Lord of the Rings books. The Hobbits win the great war but come back to find the Shire is banjo'd by Saruman and their old life is gone. So they all sail away to the east with Gandalf.

- Dany won and got the Iron Throne, but died.
- Jon had to do his duty despite not wanting to, just like always. He goes off into the wilderness to be free of duty at last.
- Tyrion is hand of the King
- Bran is King. The right man for everyone as he can't be influenced and he has no ambition or bad vices.
- Sansa is Queen but at home where she should be.
- Arya has family closure and now gets to adventure.
- Brienne is Lord Commander of the Kings Guard.
- Davos, Sam and Bronn all get nice lives and positions.
- The only sad one... is Drogon.

Either way I'm really glad it's finished now. These last two seasons there has been a significant dip in story and writing quality when it was literally peerless at one point. I'll still remember it as a utterly fantastic show overall though with a lackluster ending, like The Sopranos.
