Science has always been subject to the whim of current attitudes. I think you’d struggle to find an epoch it wasn’t.
You reference the earth being flat - Copernicus and Galileo faced excommunication and being burned rather than being silenced by a vocal minority so if anything we’ve made progress.
The beauty of science is that it is fluid. We are constantly finding out things we once thought were true aren’t anymore. We adapt, we learn.
There is a really interesting book by a guy called Thomas Kuhn about how scientific knowledge progresses if you like that sort of thing.

Reminds me of something either last year or this year of a historian or scientist or whatever it was. Said something people didn't like and it was reported like his entire lifes work would be forgotten based on a comment he has said.
It's not a popular thing to say but the trans community are argubaly some of the worst people in terms of their actions now. They want to destroy peoples lives , send death threats , dismiss science (whilst confusing gender and sex) , shape everything in their own image. It wouldn't be as bad but they turn on their own, a Scouse lad who was transitioning and decided against it said it himself that he was met with abuse for suggesting transitioning wasn't the answer. The lad is a prominent figure in Liverpool LGBT as well, a drag queen in his spare time.
Mate was telling me last night that it's not just the fake trans nonsense, young people are creating their own disorders and genuinely believing them. The maddest being thinking you are a character from your favourite show. It's this assumption (and subsequent spotlight on them) that is telling young people who live in the internet that whatever you say is true , nobody can tell you it's wrong.
Can relate. My daughter is 8, and her best mate's sister is 10, and has decided she's a boy called Joe. She's always been an absolute handful, her 16 year old sister has come out as gay a bit ago and her parents have just had a messy AF breakup, it's clearly a cry for attention but... ya know. My daughter is asking all sorts of questions about these issues and I'm trying to deal with them as best I can, but, she's 8, FFS.
