He was voted president and got 70 something million votes the last time around. Even I wouldn't argue that he isn't popular with Republicans

also interesting to note he got the most Latino/Black vote than any other Republican candidate in history, so the accusations of him appealing (solely) to white-supremacists don't hold.

There's something about him that people like. Something which his critics don't seem to understand.

Who has said this here? I never argued that he wasn't popular, just that he is a completely vacuous buffoon with almost no redeeming qualities. This assessment of him is supported by almost everything he has ever said or done and his clowncar administration. You can offset that fact against his popularity and try to find something deeper but I think you're just looking past the obvious facts of the man's essence. You love him for the same fundamental reasons most of his supporters do. BeCaUse He OwNz Da LiBz. Well congrats Donald, what an amazing skill to have

i don't love him, prev. wouldn't even vote for him. i've made that clear quite a bit.

but i disagree he's "a completely vacuous buffoon with almost no redeeming qualities." - in terms of vacuousness, it's rather Biden/Harris that show them qualities.

my own take is Trump is the first President since Reagan to really speak to those profound American Dream ideals. A myth that we thought had died, but seems like it only slumbered.

Lol wtf is this? D mate, put down whatever you're reading and step away from the political compass tests, they're doing you no good.

He's a complete simpleton, there's nothing deeper or more interesting to him than that. Anyone with a half-functioning instinct for another human being can see that he is a brainless con artist who has overachieved in the only Western country where a man like him could achieve anything at all. The only thing that separates him from any other tinpot populist before him, and the ones that will certainly come after, is that you could probably find some shred of leadership qualities or smarts beneath their exterior if you looked hard enough.

Trump has nothing. He is a nothing and he knows it, which is why he constantly seeks the sort of shallow validation from screaming dimwits at his rallies. He will go down in history as the most profoundly unfit-for-office and mentally unstable human being to ever be President of the US, and it won't even be close. I say this not because of the articles I have read about him, but because of the things I have seen him do with my eyes and the things I have heard him say with my ears.

I have no more to say on the utter loser than that, but please don't let that stop you from trying to convince the rest of the thread that he is playing 4 dimensional chess

*shakes head

I almost spat my tea out

I can only see people liking Trump as a perverse form of entertainment.

As a politician, I guess you could call him "effective" at least, even if its the lowest common denominator kind of politics.

But as a human, he's simply an abortion of one. I always try and find the middle ground and consider all points of view, but I simply can't understand anyone who can look at Trump and like him. To say he embodies the American Dream when he's a racist hateful serial business failure who was gifted every opportunity in life on a silver platter is... Well, mad.

oh wow. yeah that whole trans thing is becoming an issue. gender-fluid i can understand but biological sex is set in stone (with ultra-rare exceptions).

one witty comment i saw describing men in drag who demand to be called female is that they're effectively doing a form of blackface, mocking actual women. and women should probably be offended by it (if it gets as far as men partaking in womens-sports or sharing loos and whatnot).

i can't watch for than a minute of Oliver, Noah, Colbert. Utterly sanctimonious. Their presented arguments are laughably one-sided. The little i've seen of Tucker suggests he at least considers the other side of the story, even if he won't land on it.

Incidentally, i used to very much enjoy Jon Stewart.

aye...i said earlier the UK hasn't had an actual Labour/Left government since the 70's. But you wouldn't know it from the woke movement dominating mainstream culture.

that's how i understood it. i expect John Oliver viewers would disagree, while those who can't stand it would instinctively agree (could be some of the brainwashing those on the conservative side are getting, unwittingly).

without studying his program i can't say either way, not gonna put myself through that torture, tho' lol

aye...they're all at it.

we need an era of centrism to push these extreme agendas away from the mainstream.

very interesting this!

it appears my views, while often ridiculed during debate, latch onto the consciousness of members here, becoming at least in part your own views without yous realising it.

How long until some of yous start posting that Trump = Emmanuel Goldstein?

our exchange from a few days ago:

i.e. softening towards the view that Anyone But Trump won the election, rather than Joe Biden on his own merits.

Tucker Carlson consider the other side of the argument, I am sorry but I am not sure that happens.

Also, John Oliver has satirised and condemned liberal decision makers as well as conservative decisions. If you won't put yourself through more than a minute then you can't really comment on his material.

Honestly, not all will like his delivery style, which is fair enough. I honestly think he is pretty funny, even in his UK comedy store, mock the week days.

i don't think he's playing 4D-chess, i just said he speaks to those traditional ideals. Which are arguably a myth anyway (ala Death of a Salesman).

Whatever he is, he's not as worthless as you state, or otherwise he wouldn't have that much support.
To say he embodies the American Dream when he's a racist hateful serial business failure who was gifted every opportunity in life on a silver platter is... Well, mad.
i didn't say that, tho'.

The people look for someone they think embodies it. I said Trump speaks to those ideals, and his supporters believe he embodies it. I don't, as I'm more on Arthur Miller's take that it's a myth. But I recognise that many do believe in that manifest-destiny mythology, and Trump is an idol for that.

i haven't watched much, but what i have seen is he leaves a more respectable balanced impression than Oliver/Colbert/Noah.

also fair comment.

i found Jon Stewart very funny, and Tina Fey. But this current lot are like nails-on-blackboard.

So much energy burned in here. Get out and do something about it if you feel so strongly. Do you lot ever sleep?
How do you burn your energy, tommy?
