News agencies do this all the time now. Even more reputable ones. Creating stories out of nothing then using Twitter to validate or emphasise their points. ‘twitter went into meltdown’ ‘twitter erupted’ etc etc.
It’s a cycle of nothingness.
I think it's quite a serious problem and the partial death of actual journalism. It's so lazy.

Very common on the BBC and I’ve seen it on outlets like the guardian also.
When I was studying I would google a point I was wishing to make using google books and reference the academic source. It was very lazy and lacked any real investigation skills but tutors and unis seemed oblivious to it.
That’s what journalists are doing. They’re writing a half arsed article then putting search terms on twitter then linking them. It’s part of the constant news consumption that news agencies feel they have to keep pumping out nothing articles. Imagine spending years studying to be a journalist then ending up regurgitating nonsense all day.

I was meaning in a cultural appropriation through name change type of way.

I had no idea her real name was White, thats weird. Nothing wrong with it really, black in that context is just a colour.

Obviously you can say 'negro' is too but there are a lot more connotations of it being a black person of african heritage.

It does seem a strange thing to do, but if the White/Black name change happened now I'm pretty sure there would be some sort of back-lash, particularly on social media.

Maybe, not sure.

My main thing was I genuinely thought Joey Negro was black with that name. I would probably have bet a decent about of money on it without even thinking. I doubt it would if someone's surname was just Black.

I guess you probably said it as a joke but I'm just bored at work lol

It was a joke, but the Joey Negro one is a bit extreme and must have been intended to imply he was black. Back in the seventies there was a music journalist called Caroline Coon who was very close to the Clash and some other punk bands. I saw her mentioned in a newspaper article a while ago and did wonder how she would have got on nowadays with a name like that.

That's her real name isn't it?

There is an actor called Carrie Coon and I don't think she has had anything as it's her real name.

Isn't it her real name though?

There is a brand of cheese in Australia called Coon cheese. Or at least there was until they changed the name a couple of months back to Cheer cheese, because it could be offensive.
It was named after the founder of the company - Edward Coon.

As expected, there was the usual media discussion with outrage about pc gone mad vs cultural sensitivities, which lasted a couple of days until it got filed under "tomorrows chip wrappers"

I didn't understand all the fuss over that name change, nobody made the company do it, it was their choice to change it or not. No different to the Royal Family changing their name to Windsor to hide their Germanic background. Or Trump's Grandad changing their name from Drumpf.
