Turning into another one of these threads again is it?

Little Tubes: Hey dad, I'm hanging out with the girls later to watch Bridesmaids.

Tubey: That's great, and I fully support you. But remember, you're biologically a man.

Little Tubes: Yeah, but you know, I'm a woman now.

Tubey: Yes, but biologically and factually, you're a man. But you identify as a woman and I support that.

Little Tubes: You reminding me I'm factually a man in every conversation doesn't feel very supportive.

Tubey: I'm morally compelled to remind you.
This is pretty funny, but I do think in general there’s something to be said for being factually truthful and not letting things get lost based on personal ideals.

Just lost over two hours working through the thread in the hope of learning was non binary meant.. after page 10 my head blew off, but luckily got back into familiar territory on the woke debate.
I feel the need to start a new thread for the unenlightened.. to clear up all these things .. not debate them.. just get some clarity..

As it falls in topic though I'll ask one thing. Cultural appropriation. And I have a real life example that I'm worried will get my lightie (he's 10) in trouble.
He has my wifes hair.. its super curly and big.. He has given himself a gaming name including the word "afro" ... cos he has big curly hair. He doesn't differentiate between his hair and a person of colours hair.. they're both curly and he loves it.
I expressed this concern to my wife and some friends that he will be labeled racist for using cultural appropriation. Is it a valid concern?

Has anyone called him racist or labelled it cultural appropriation?

I wouldn't worry about it mate. He is just using it in a descriptive sense.

The use of the term lightie however?...

The cultural appropriation debate is such a minefield.

There was a post going around the socials a few years back, where an American girl of Japanese heritage posted a pic of one a girl wearing a kimono style prom dress with the caption “My heritage is not your damn prom dress” or something along those lines. It went viral as an example of cultural appropriation.

The problem was that a media outlet Japan went out and showed the pic of the girl in the kimono dress to some of the people out on the streets of Tokyo and the overwhelming response was positive with most stating that it was great to see people from other countries embrace their culture.

Outside of the obvious, there’s some serious reaching that goes on in this debate sadly.

As soon as I hear the term "cultural appropriation" I switch off.

It gets used by one of two types of people.

Type 1: The very rare "Im sure you're a great laugh at a party" kind of person who thinks it's a thing and crusades about it on twitter (or possibly writes for the Guardian)

The equally joyful "white men are endangered" types who actively seek the Type 1s to seethe at. Both types live in a self-perpetuating cycle fuelled by the Type 2s' conviction that they are surrounded on all sides by Type 1s even though they probably number in the tens.

There’s a lot of people getting ‘outraged’ and people being ‘outraged’ at the ‘outrage’ when it’s just a selective few twitter accounts and in truth no one really cares.
Still think it’s unacceptable for a white person to have dreads though, largely cos they look silly, are likely to never wash and be called Tarquin or Delilah. Probs see them a few years down the line managing an estate agents. Except the old ones that go full rogue and walk around with dogs led by twine.

Everything is racist now, whatever he or you do, say, think, will be wrong to some one

Has anyone called him racist or labelled it cultural appropriation?

no.. but wouldn’t want it to get to that either..
