Couple of right wing racist things last few days. Here's a tweet about Meghan and Harry's new baby.

Nothing to see there.

Also, the Daily Mail reporting certain parts of England are "no go" areas due to Muslims.

... what they've confused here is that there are areas in the UK where multiculturalism hasn't worked brilliantly and instead you have communities 'keeping themselves to themselves' - but to equate that to 'no go areas' is obviously incorrect.

It's the likes of these where I get conflicted about free speech as a concept. In theory, they should be able to say these things and be challenged for them back, as free speech is a two way street. But the journo on Twitter who has made that George Floyd 'joke' has disabled replies from most, and the Mail owns the platform they publish their rubbish on and media regulators are useless, so it's too easy to have too much power on one side and not be held to account.

So this basically:

... is my concern. We're normalising extremism by letting things like this go uncontested. I don't know the answer and mostly just typing as I think, but... yeah, uncomfortable with it despite being instinctively a libertarian.

Stuff about no-go areas, you only really believe if you want to. A few seconds of thought or research will show that no such areas exist. I lived in Edinburgh for several years and the only no-go area was the city centre for the locals as it is too busy and overpriced. There are a few areas I wouldn’t like to be at night mind but would be more wary of groups of local white kids than anyone else.
Have a friend who also worked a lot with many members of the muslim community in Glasgow, who were actively involved in charity work and schemes to promote cross cultural integration.
Horrible journalism and they must be held to account. It’s not about free speech, this is about lies and we must work towards a way of stopping it.

I note with interest you didn't counter the Mails claims, clearly described in the headline, of racist attacks against white kids, Taliban-rule & women lacking basic freedoms. Burchill & Sakar are both known as trolls, both have written much clickbait for The Guardian. Best to ignore them. The Mail on the other hand does tend to report on things The Left find uncomfortable to engage with.

There is a real issue in Europe with some folk from Muslim communities aggressively walking around like they own the place. I've experienced it myself. The Left however won't engage with this issue.

Read the Mail article and make your own mind up, instead of reflexively believing what your echo chamber tells you to think. Note: the author of the Mail piece is a Muslim himself.

Further note: the Mail website is horrible to read on Desktop: pop-up ads everywhere. Read it on mobile view.

Yes, Ed Husain wrote it, visited his Twitter and he has a thread on it. It doesn't matter, the Mail have put an editorial spin on it.

A few more seconds of thought or research may have gotten you to consider the experiences of people other than yourself.

You're still not countering the claims made in the headline & article.

Oh I'm sure they happen and are real. "Islamic grooming gangs" are a real, provable thing for example. I just think the extent is over exacerbated, usually because these are poorer people and areas where scapegoats are a common refrain throughout history. Before Muslims, it was black people. Before black people, it was the Irish and so on. Hell, as recently as the early 2000s the Polish were taking over and we had the same hysteria.

Multiculturalism has failed in these areas, I said as such. I have no doubts there are grains of truth in such articles, but they aren't "no go areas" and describing them as such is extremist sensationalism and doesn't help. It just furthers the divide - indeed the Mails editorial direction here isn't to provoke conversation; it is merely to fuel racism.
