This is todays media... it only takes one or two nut-jobs to make a controversial comment on social media, and the press use that as a headline to suggest it's a widespread belief. Somebody makes a comment on twitter, and The Guardian use that as a basis for an article. This is a national newspaper. Crazy.
It's just symbolism, it's hardly new.
Looks like classic grifting to me anyway. He says a statement, it gets media attention, he releases a brand which is similar to groups clothes people such as Proud Boys. People buy it.
I, and I guess you, wouldn't have known about Tom Hanks' son and let alone his brand so it's worked.
