Fred Pickering

Everton had some colossal players in the 60s but bad luck with some too: Kay (betting), Pickering (injury), even the Golden Vision I believe carried injuries to his feet a lot of the time.
Yes but we had a big budget plus a youth system that created top players who stood in for players who were off form at that time - it does not happen today!

That's very true. The likes of Kenyon, Whittle, Kenny, Sergeant, even the likes of Darracott could fill in.

EDIT: Kenny and Sergeant 1970s.

Joe Royle, Colin Harvey, John Hurst, Tommy Wright, And Jimmy Husband, and Andy Rankin as a back up keeper who West was dropped if he had a good run ....nothing like that happens today they get sent out on loan or sit on the bench bar one or two......

Never mind local lads filling in, they'd be stars in this Everton team!

My first hero in blue.
Saw his debut and for the many who to them Fred Pickering is just a name, you don't know what you missed.
I'm so sad at this news.
RIP Fred.
I'm pretty sure that in his debut one of his goals was a 'Scorpion' type, there have been 2 scored similarly in the past 18 months, one was scored by
Giroud and the other I cannot remember, but I'm sure Sky. won't have Fred in their memory banks. The goal came from the Bullens Road right wing
at pace, Fred dived for a header into the Gwladys Street end, the cross was deflected behind him still at speed, he bent his right leg at the knee and
back-heeled the ball above his head and into the net like a bullet.

My late father and older brother were at that game to see him played on a mud bath of a pitch too...

If my memory serves he missed a couple of sitters before the hat trick. Oh for the days when they interrupted the advertisements and made the announcement on Granada TV that we had broken the transfer record

Top Top money - my late father when Fred was at Blackburn, stated we have to get him, fed up of him scoring against us - record fee at that time - debut for us Hattrick - debut for England -Hattrick - he was a goal machine look at his record he was still our leading scorer in Europe untill the DM era
Only for his knee injury which into days medical technology maybe could have been sorted he would have had many seasons with him - the chant as a young boy - cried out "Pickering bang um in" and he obliged in most games a great all round centre foreward who started off as a full back at Blackburn Rovers!

Strange thing Dave, the first time I seen Fred play was at Ewood when I went to an away game!!!!!!:)

Gutted to hear this news a prolific scorer for us which only injury stopped him playing for us.... he would have scored yesterday, with the chances provided RIP to Fred and his family - sad news indeed- a photo alongside Fulham's George Cohen - a fullback converted to a striker by Blacburn he scored so many times against us we had to sign him

I’d really love to see this kit make a comeback. Classic round neck with white trim and royal blue socks with white tops, the opposite of today’s socks, which I hate.
