FIFA banning poppies

You can blame all this venerating the forces on recent governments in order to distract people from the dodgy wars said governments sent them to fight.

I made the same point earlier......you make it more succinctly, Dan :)

There is absolutely no doubt this current Poppy fascism started in the early years of this century, in the wake of unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Before that it was much more low key, you never saw a Poppy on a TV presenter until the weekend before November 11th and not every celebrity or footballer or whatever being interviewed on TV was shoved out in front of the cameras wearing one.

People either wore one or they didn't and there was no comment made one way or the other.

(except for poor old Michael Foot whom got it in the neck for wearing a duffle coat at the Cenotaph one year lol)

You never heard of football teams having poppies embroidered on their kits until what, maybe ten years ago.

Blair's spin doctors upped the ante in an attempt to manufacture consent for their foreign policy blunders.

They've done this loads of times.

I remember a stink about it a few years ago when we were due to play, I think, Spain in a friendly

...and they make political decisions every time they hold the world cup venue vote.

Still, they are right here: imagine if Croatia or Serbia want to honour their war dead...or Germany FFS!

Indeed, Mikey.

The FA have been knocked back on this before, they knew they would be knocked back again yet still they went ahead and floated this idea.

Why?

Because it is way of setting themselves up as victims in the eyes of the populist media and trying to curry favour with the public after the recent scandal with Big Sam and the woeful performance of their team in the Euros.

The Romans had a name for it, Dave.

Bread and circuses :pint2:

People tend to forget the German soldiers ended up like your Grandad in slums and shot or disabled with terrible wounds for the rest of their lives

Thing is, FIFA just cant judge whether every nations wish for an emblem, poppy, whatever, every time. For what, 200 ish FAs?

Sure, the poppy, to most of us, means exactly what we know it is for. But if say Germany played a side from a part of the world where the swastika was seen as the original symbol it was, and that was their symbol of a date, or an event, or something, then the feathers would fly if they wanted that on a one off kit.

Like someone said, the FA should just have kept out of this.

Have a wreath, minutes silence, Last Post.

Every single English and Scottish player will wear a poppy on their shirt at their club anyrate. IF they want to.

Why is this even news each time, they haven't "banned" the poppy. It's just the same stance on political statements isnt it!? It's been around for years iirc

Because the nobhead home country FAs - whipped up by the right wing media - have put the ball into FIFAs court.

I dont see why it such an issue one way or another.

Its a game of football, why MUST they have poppies on the kit? They can do something else to commemorate it cant they?

At the same time why ban it anyway?

Realistically if there are no poppies on the kits is anyone related to those being remembered (basically everyone) going to be bothered?
