Fernando Torres vs Everton Away

Loved Yak but we are talking about two entirely different classes of player here.
That's my point really. There was a 1-2 year period in Torres career where he was one of the top strikers in the world. Before and After that period he has been way off that level

He used to be absolutely quality, top 5 strikers in the world easily.

I think there's a number of reasons why he isn't able to get near the form he once had. With Liverpool, he was the main focal point of their attack, everything went through him, and as much as I hate to say, a midfield of Mascherano, Alonso and Gerrard was one of the very best in the world at that time.

Injuries have no doubt also taken their toll on him, he's lost a fair bit of pace and doesn't have anywhere near that confidence any more.

What price would you pay for him these days? At Everton you'd surely be livid if in some crazy situation we paid even £10m for him.

This is also true mate, but I genuinely (possibly as my hatred for them was much stronger in those days) never noticed it.

Not sure I'd be happy paying 10m for him these days. As much as I want him to come good we are not in a position to pay that kind of money for somebody who could be finished. Funny though because 6-8m and I'd bite your hand off, so suppose 2m isn't all that different.

I was always terrified of him whenever derby day used to roll around but I don't believe for one second that Torres was ever a great footballer technically. Granted he was not quite as bad as Jelavic obviously but I can't recall him ever beating a man with skill rather than his pace and often looked a bit clumsy as in heavy touches covered up by his immense pace.

Pace was 90% of his game and now to me he looks absolutely drained of belief, after all he has lost the pace that used to terrify defenders and was also his weapon to get in behind any backline. Once he was in behind his finishing was top drawer but as we all know strikers thrive on confidence and self belief, He doesn't believe anymore.

I think Steven Gerrard was also a massive player in Torres' success, they seemed to always be on the same page and he had confidence Gerrard would always pick him out.

All in all he'll never again be the player he was, can anyone think of a bigger demise than his?

3 Years ago was without doubt the best Striker in World Football, now, I think Naismith offers more.

If I remember right, he got injured at Liverpool and they kept playing him when he wasn't fit and he just never recovered from it. He needs to go back to Spain

Drogba was always better than him. Better goal tallies in the league over a longer period and he did it in nearly every single big game as well. Torres was never the best striker in the prem never mind the world. He did used to be very good though. Injury has taken its toll though a bit like it did with Owen and Kaka. Once they lose that lightning pace their confidence goes as well. Also the counterattacking hoofball that Rafael had perfected played perfectly to his strengths.

This is very true, and often underappreciated, but it can make all the difference in the world when a player goes from one system where everything is built around them, to another where they are just the cog in machine.

Many good points have already been pointed out, I think all of them valid:

- Cumulation of injuries, lost that explosion of pace
- Change of system, highlighting his tactical deficiencies. He's having to run the channels a lot more now.
- Not enjoying his football any more, lost his confidence, frustration that he's not as good as he used to be.

So much of football is in the mind. He's clearly not the player he once was, he knows it, and this results in a feedback loop where his performances are nervous and patchy, he frustrated and doesn't enjoy it his performances suffer etc etc.

Would love to know the full story behind this fella.

First two seasons at Liverpool he was f*cking terrifying, one of the best centre forwards i've ever seen. When you watch videos of his early goals there you notice how fast he was, losing your pace due to injury is one thing, working out another facet of your game to counter it is something else.

Mate of mine used to look after a Liverpool youth player and said that Rafael would play Gerrard and Torres through thick & thin and part of that is why his body took such a hit, make of that what you will.

The season Liverpool had the spine of Mascerano, Alonso, Gerrard the Torres...ive honestly no idea how they didnt win the league...think that was when they rolled into Old trafford and r4ped united.

Fortunately, they are always inconsistant but Torres then was unplayable. Had everything but just shows you in football how things can change so quickly. Injury he had took a yard of pace of him and he was never the same. Its why when you get ridiculous offers for players you take it. Cos on ACL injury or the like and they might never be the same player.

Not having that torres wasnt class though because he was. Clearly the vid has been done by a pi55ed off chelsea fan

Imagine this season if it clicks for us...Lukaku with Barkley behind him like torres was with gerrard...could be frightening

Not quite as bad as Jelavic? Fernando Torres at his peak was not quite as bad as Jelavic? You cannot add that 'quite' into the middle there. They were nowhere close.
It's like saying Robin Van Persie was not quite as bad as Jermaine Beckford
