Federer v Murray

I think the last British winner of Wimbledon was Virginia Wade back in around '77, which was her majestys Silver Jubilee if memory serves, some have come close since then, Henman is no more, that Rusedski or whatever he was isin't really British, and now all the talk is of Murray as the leading light in home expectations.

I know Federer won, couldn't help hearing about it from some source or another.

And it's not the winning that's important, but the taking part.

at least that's what I heard.

Who here agrees that it's the taking part and not the winning that is important?

Anybody who thinks that are wasting their time with Everton - it's all about the winning, it's a competitive sport, it's not a hobby or a past-time. I bet Sue Barker was harping on about how well he has done to get to the final.

So what! He lost, badly. What's the point doing well to get to the final if your not going to compete?

No but we are not pushed enough to be proud in this country, were not pushed to be winners, schools don't give children the chance to be proud.

And it all comes down to the same issue, afraid of offending anybody else.

Be interested to hear from the American's and Australian posters on this one. What are the schools like, are you trained to be winners, or also rans? Because in the UK to be a winner is not as important as just being there.

Thats right.

British people have never won anything ever.

No Olympic gold medalists, no Formula 1 winners, no world Snooker champions, no Cycling world champions.

Nothing.

Cause they were all afraid of offending someone.

Reckon Andy "anyone but England" Murray really cares.

Snooker doesn't count as it's the most dreary sport on the planet.

Motor Racing is the car, the engine, it's not a massive sporting achievement.

The Cycling is one exception as they have decided to do something about it, and now they are reaping benefits.

But generally we don't win much. What's the biggest sport in this country? The one sport that nearly every kid plays? And how many times have we been successful? How many English kids actually make it to be world class?

But this country has produced numerous successful sportspersons over the years.

You can't deny that just because Murray got beat and we aren't successful in some sports.

The biggest sport in the country is angling isn't it.

You know what I mean. Football.

We don't produce sportsman who dominate sports. People who are standing alone.

We just don't. Happy to be proved wrong though, and there are probably exceptions.

But my point is that we as a nation have a defeatest attitude because winning is not instilled at an early age.

.

Blah blah blah political correctness gone mad, blah blah blah I'm not a nationalist I'm just patriotic, blah blah blah White middle class men are the most discriminated against minority in Britain these days.

Rule Britannia my arse.

Sorry lids, carry on.

It is a strange one. I'm not sure its a matter of talent as Murray has defeated all of the top players numerous times, often in major events. Federer is probably the greatest player ever, and whilst Nadal certainly had the edge over him you could feasibly argue that if Nadal had kept up that form he would have surpassed anything Federer has done. The two of them are really exceptionally good. Murray is improving all the time so it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't win it at some point but I don't think you can really question his mentality or talent as he's one of the best players in the world, and you don't get there without a lot of both.

You got a problem with me lad, do you want to sort it out? Come to the Lisbon game at Goodison - seriously.

Well top players have the mental toughness to not lose straight sets, doesn't matter who it's against. Otherwise your not a top player.

Give over you pair  Silly sods.

I guess we've been spoilt a little by the finals between Nadal and Federer. They nearly always evolved into 5 set epics stretching out over 5 hours. Most finals before this era weren't like that. I remember one match at Wimbledon Pete Sampras wiped the floor with Agassi. It happens. No doubt Murray will look at why he's lost two finals to a player he's beaten regularly on the tour and attempt to improve whatever is causing him to do so.

I don't think we need to assign labels to him like we did with Tim Henman, a player that was considerably better than many gave him credit for.
