Royal Blue Jersey
Player Valuation: £35m
I was reading an article today about Dixie Dean playing for Sligo Rovers; Dixie only played 11 games (scoring 11 goals) but the quote from Sligo officials this week was:
Well, I'd call it an appreciation of history. We've all heard the old stories, seen the old scores, heard about the old matches. Many things are etched into legend and passed on through folklore; maybe you got a snippet of an old VHS or some other relic as a second-hand source of their greatness. For whatever reason, these players are still known today, and I'd bet we've all got our favourites.
Here it is
Favourite Everton player you've never seen: Now, I love midfielders; great passers, playmakers and the like. I think strikers are selfish, one-note players that don't contribute enough (that's just me). But I can't help it, Dixie Dean just stands out. Call me a philistine but if I had a time machine, if I could visit any period, any date in history, I would choose 3pm May 5th 1928, Everton v Arsenal and Dixie's hattrick to secure that legendary, unbroken and frankly unbelievable 60 goal record. I honestly can't even fathom how it was done, I mean 60 goals... the fact his name is still rings around today, he has become an almost mythical legend. It will still be talked about around these parts in a century.
Favourite Everton player you've seen: Have to say Arteta. I wouldn't say he was the best - Lescott shades that, imo and Martyn comes very close - but he was my favourite. Played with such impeccable skill, grace, vision and flair. Just a quality player.
Favourite Everton player in the squad today: Ossie. Love his close control and skill, his vision and under-appreciation. Will never forget the colossal performance in the 2-0 vs. Fiorentina, that night he was the complete midfielder and just did everything.
So who are yours?
and it got me thinking of who my favourite Everton player I'd never seen was. Doesn't make much sense, does it - how can you have a favourite player you've never watched?"he enlivened and enriched people’s lives to the extent that his name crops up in conversation even now, sometime, somewhere in the town every single day”.
