As you say its ifs and buts. My thinking with 94 was always if Hill could yake Schumacher all the way and but for a moment of impetuous madness, would have won, then Senna with all his skills could havw gone further.
95 id agree, but 96/97 Williams were so utterly dominant would Senna have walked away from that potential?
It was only ever so close with Damon in 94 because Schumacher got DQed from the British Grand Prix, which I thought was a grossly overharsh penalty in relation to the offence (ok, rules are rules, but its so rare to see a black flag for anything but the most serious misdemeanor).. and then got banned for 2 races after being stripped of his Belgian GP win. That's an entire quarter of the season he was excluded from, half of which he had 'won'.
I just felt there were a hell of a lot of politics in play that year and the FIA had to really give Williams all the help they could. Really based on performances Schumacher wins 94 by 40-50 points.
Damon had that one brilliant drive in Japan which, ironically, Senna had he been leading the charge wouldn't have been able to improve on, otherwise Williams were outclassed whenever they had to go head to head with Schumacher's Benetton.
