I think the response from Mercedes is clever* as, without seeing all the Red Bull documentation, they've insinuated that Red Bull are trying to discredit Lewis.
With the recent racial comments and concerns of trying to damage Lewis's image, any insinuation of trying to Tarnish his image is not going to be accepted.
It should put a stop to RedBull's actions unless they disclose the information, which I doubt they will as it may go against them due to the above and pettiness.
In layman's terms: they've tried to do their legs and Mercedes have called their bluff on it. Hopefully, it should put the issued to bed... until the next race.
*although it shouldn't be used if there isn't evidence of them targeting Lewis specifically.
