Everton Youth Teams Thread

We have a stocked U23 so maybe we couldn't guarantee them regular matches? Or we just didn't have the spare finances. Interesting to see how much the new lad was.

Also think Gibson is a CB by trade but I could be wrong.

if I'm not wrong he played left back for either England u17s or 18s in their last summer tournament and was the standout.

He's not really combative in the sense you mean mate. He's quite small in stature but can look after himself. He's a proper footballer though and many on here are surprised that he hasn't been given an opportunity in our first team yet. He plays with his head up and is a very good passer of the ball, both long and short. If I was to liken him to somebody it would be Paul Scholes in his later years when he played deeper. Obviously I'm talking style rather than actual ability here;).

He has been unlucky with injuries at bad times and was originally selected alongside our other young lads in the worlds cup winning U20 squad, but had to pull out through injury.

You're getting a little gem in my view mate, but can't say I'm not a little concerned by the fact that you're expecting a combative type player.

Cheers, I guess I thought he might be combative considering the players we'd gone for before getting him, and also the title of this blog :) - https://harrydunford.wordpress.com/2016/02/05/liam-walsh-is-hard-as-fk/

But yeah a later life Paul Scholes is probably exactly what we were missing if we couldn't get someone with a bit more physical presence, someone to link the defence to the attack in a 352 or 343 and play key passes. The players he's competing with in that role are garbage so I expect him to play, and I doubt you would have let him go if there wasn't the guarantee he would.

Hi all,

Birmingham fan here in peace.

On the comment about Walsh not playing enough, we signed him after failing to get 4 combative ball playing midfielders in a row, the latest failure being Alex Song, so if Walsh is good enough he will be starting for us.

I guess my question to you lot is, is he good enough?
Liam Walsh has been pretty much covered here. I think he's combative enough for the Championship even at 19. Championship will be his minimum level, high hopes he'll be a PL player. You'll love him. Doesn't hide from anything on the pitch , though small has got good upper body strength to hold players off , though sometimes I think he over does things to prove his size is not a barrier I.e he'll pick up a few yellows. He's possibly the last of our so called " Golden generation" from a few years ago to make the step up to our first team . Tough competition in his position and bad timing with injuries mainly. Scored some cracking goals too .

Short answer , give him a chance and you have a little gem on your hands mate.
Gets around the pitch well, can pick a pass and has a good attitude on the field.
Injuries have held him back , and I suspect his size, most of the lads that have watched him are surprised he hasn't been given a go in the first team.
I was talking to a couple of are youth players a while back and they were raving about him, said he is a lot stronger than he looks.
Good move for you and him if it goes ok.

You're both right in the sense that while he played left back for England he's played CB for Newcastle youth. He's certainly got the build to be a CB .
I watched those England U17s games in the summer hoping to see more of Alex Denny, the attacking guys like Phil Foden and Sancho were probably the picks but Gibson was very good at left back, powerful going forward, good positioning rarely beaten in a tackle. He stood out for me at the time and I remember him, when we signed him I wished I'd have taken more notice to explain what it was I saw, all I really have is a gut instinct that this kid will make it with us.
Over the years I've seen four really good full backs playing for England U17s that have stood out and I've retained in my memory - Kenny, Connolly , a left back at Chelsea called Jay DaSiva who's probably on loan somewhere now and Lewis Gibson.
I think Unsy will eventually play him alongside Feeney as a CB with Foulds as LB but he's good enough to play both positions well.

Very interesting article mate. Hadn't seen that before but I know he had a good 6 months spell at Yeovil a couple of seasons ago. We all expected him to kick on then but, as I said, he's been hampered by injuries at the wrong time, Tom Davies possibly got the opportunity in his stead and made the most of it.

Despite his size he knows after to look after himself. But overall I would call him a ball player with a bit of tenacity, rather than a hard man who can play a bit. If that makes sense.

Hope he does really well for you guys.

Watched him in his last game - he did not look match fit coming back from a long term injury , but still impressive - a little gem!

You won't find many in here who don't love the kid. I'm made up he's getting a chance to play first team football with you. Proper club with proper expectations and pressure. I really hope he gets a chance to flourish.

Hiya mate I've written a few bits on Walsh in this thread f you search back over the last few years.

The shouts of Scholes toward the end of his career are spot on. For me he's our most naturally talented young player (even more so than Davies) but is a very small lad. I always sensed he might be 21/22 before he really broke through, he will be 20 soon so this is a big opportunity for him to make a name for himself.

He was going to be involved with the under 20s World Cup squad and I'm told would have been a definite starter had he not broken his foot. That has set him back and probably cost him training with the first team this summer. He's had a lot of bad luck with timing on a couple of occasions.

He will sit and dictate play from deep for you, has a great passing range with either foot, reads the game well and is not shy of a tackle. I think Redknap and your fans will love him if he can get a run of starts and cope with the physicality of the game.

Anyway it would be fantastic if you could come be periodically and keep us updated on how he is progressing!
