Everton Youth Teams Thread

I like the fact he give Davies a taste of the first team, then he said none of them were ready and a while off. A week or two later Davies and DCL were back in the team, and stayed there. He made a big turnaround whereas others would have left them out to prove the initial point.

Remember when some were trying to convince themselves that Cuco was going to be back up to Kenny who's been given a total of 10 competitive mins in the first team?

"Everton will hold off making a decision on Jonjoe Kenny's future - but Ronald Koeman has not ruled out sending the defender on loan.

Kenny was a surprise omission from the squad for last week's Europa League tie against Ruzomberok and has not travelled with the squad to Slovakia for tonight's second leg.

Seamus Coleman remains on the sidelines after breaking his leg earlier in the year and so Koeman brought in Cuco Martina, on a free transfer from Southampton, to beef up his options at right-back, which also include Mason Holgate.

Kenny, on the back of captaining Everton's under-23s to the Premier League 2 title and then winning the u-20s World Cup this summer, was expected to be given a chance to impress but has been left at home by the manager.

Asked if Kenny would join Kieran Dowell and Joe Williams in being sent sent on loan this season, he said: “We know that we have several options for his position with Mason Holgate, with Cuco Martina and Kenny – and, finally, the best will play.

“Of course, we are looking at the development of young players and what we did with Dowell was the best way to develop the player.

“And at the end of this pre-season we will take a decision: if Jonjoe is not really close to a position in the first-team then maybe we will think about what the best is to develop the player."

Almost as depressing as reading we're prepared to let Connolly go as a makeweight for Siggi. Hard to see how he can make an accurate decision without Jonjoe playing competitive minutes, his attacking intent would have been ideal for the home Europa tie.

I trust the manager but I am a little miffed about recent events; not because I feel development is being hampered but because I enjoy watching the players. Forest I'll keep an eye on, wherever Kenny goes (if he does) I'll watch but I'm seriously annoyed about the Connolly stuff. If we'd rather let him go than stump up an extra £5m for a player I give up.

Well I'm reluctant to join the bash Koeman brigade , but I'm genuinely disappointed in RK over these recent events, particularly Kenny and Connolly I was hoping that two young defenders would be the ones who benefit the most from being around him. Development is not just about buying young players or growing them in the U23s , we know we're very good at both those aspects. I want us to be a club who stand out as pushing them over the line into being 1st team squad players , who can make these players we all recognise as being promising into the finished article.

Really disappointing about kenny but the writing was on the wall with the signing of Martina and can't see anything other than him going out on loan . So with dowell on loan and possibly kenny, and connolly rumoured to be a lightweight to the sigurdsson deal players who I thought this season would be in the squad of 18 and getting some game time with the extra games we hopefully will have are being shipped out .
Cannot see any of the current u23 breaking through to the match day squad and expect walsh to go a similar path to dowell . Koeman for me is here two years max his vision is short term, players for the now hopefully his strategy works and we can win a trophy along the way .

Dowell I can live with - he needs games and whilst obviously talented, his tendency to go missing and look off the pace, plus perceived lack of work rate meant he was always going to be fighting an uphill battle to get games here at the moment. A move to The Championship (provided he gets games) might be the best thing for him, but his obvious talent means he can't be written off just yet. A loan suits everyone.

Connolly - I'm not a fan of the idea of using him as a makeweight in the Sigurdsson deal, but I do struggle to see a path to the first team for him. I know the academy coaches were big fans of Connolly, but to my eyes he doesn't really have a position he excels in. He's played left back a lot, but that's more because he's been able to fill in there and others have been preferred at right back. Being naturally right footed is a bit of a hindrance for a left back (not to say it definitely means he won't make it there - Maldini, Irwin, etc all examples of good right-footed left backs), and I've never been 100% convinced by him in that role. Of the three, I can sort of understand him being seen as the most dispensable.

Kenny - The lad is a talent and I've thought that since the first time I saw him play. I grudgingly understand if Koeman doesn't feel he is ready for the 1st team yet, but seeing Martina getting games when we know he is nothing but a stop-gap until Coleman returns bugs me greatly. It may have been a gamble but for the development of their careers, I think we'd have been better off letting Holgate and Kenny deputise between them in the interim. Martina is a player who we know probably doesn't have much of a future here, but he is a blocker in the path of the development of a potentially really good player. If Martina is going to be 1st choice, I really hope Kenny can get a loan - I remember what a great experience it was for Coleman when he went to Blackpool and I'd hope that either a top Championship side or a lower Premier League side may want him. Need to be careful and pick the right side though, the debacle of Galloway's loan last season should be a cautionary tale
