Everton Youth Teams Thread

Definitely. Is Tait's position under review at all or does no-one at the club care about the results at under 21 level?
I wouldn’t have thought so . We had 4 u18 s starting, 2 more coming off the bench , 6 players off on loan since Christmas . I like the way he’s switching Graham around, giving Olayiwola freedom to develop and Pita getting game time . If we had a big bunch of 22 year olds playing and losing I’d feel differently.

Fair enough results aren't the be all and end all at this level but I'm just not convinced he's a good developer of players but your assessment of how he's working with Graham, Olayiwola and Pita suggests I'm probably being too harsh

Well over the seasons I’ve often been critical of Tait, I’m trying to look at him objectively with what he’s got to work with and how he’s developing them. We could change him out for the next Pep , he , or she, could change the style into a continuous press , high tempo style that’s exciting to watch but without the players and synergy with how the first team play it won’t happen.

I think my main gripe at youth level is the seemingly lack of a strategy to develop players for possible first team inclusion. You look at the very best academies like Barcelona and Ajax and they have a strategy and pathway running throughout the club. We just seem to employ ex players and play turgid football for the most part at youth level which seems to me to be made up as they go along. But you have a better insight into our youth set up as you watch us play more so I'm encouraged that you think Tait is trying things out with our better youth

One thing to keep an eye on this summer is what happens with Coleman. If he is serious about going into coaching, the youth team coaches might get shuffled around to open up a spot for him.

….or he might have higher ambitions, I wonder if he might be tempted into management, particularly if the ROI job is up for grabs. It’s not just at EFC where he’s highly thought of.

I've always defended Tait with the view that he might not always play the best football or whatever but if you hand him a genuinely elite player at this level, he's usually extremely good at squeezing the talent out of them and just platforming them. Ultimately, 9/10 youth prospects aren't going to make it, but he definitely gives that one the absolute best chance of succeeding at the highest level were as it seems to me Unsworth was more focused on the collective. Whenever you hand Tait a player like Gordon, Simms, Broadhead, Ishe, Cannon or now Graham and Olayiwola, they do extremely well.

Granted he did lose the plot for about 12 months when he didn't have any players of that calibre and was messing around with 5 at the back but that could've been decisions made from above
