Everton Youth Teams Thread

I hope that TFG start to work ruthlessly with our younger age teams because for too long they have just been stagnating with little to no prospects of ever getting into our first team.

If it were me, I would look at the U21s and ask the coaching staff to score each player on a scale of 1-10 (1 being "never going to make it" and 10 being "nailed on for our First Team). Anyone lower than say 7 or 8 would be shipped out with U18s promoted in their place.

I would then repeat the same decision whenever a player hit 18/19. We need a production line of players who have realistic prospects of playing for us, not Salford or someone else lower down the pyramid.
Three things: first big clubs like City pay good money to really young players to join their Academy. Should we start shelling out up to hundred of thousands on long shots (every youth player under 16 is a long shot)? There are only so many players who are good enough to play in the PL one day. There are less than 500 first team Premier League players each year and those players come from about 20 different age groups. So by simple maths, if your U18 team has 20 players, getting one of those to the PL would be a good result because most players are bought to the first team from elsewhere.

Secondly, most Academies work on the assumption that each age group only has couple of potential first team players. It's just what it is. But those teams couldn't operate without enough players to field a full team so the rest are basically just making up the numbers.

Third, Everton has made quite a lot of money from youngsters sold to lower level teams. Not millions, but still money. Just because a kid is not going to play in the PL doesn't necessarily mean all the money was wasted.

Let’s be honest, none of the U21s look close to being good enough to play or even sell. Graham is the one exception perhaps.

What is the point in keeping the likes of Reece Welch and naming him captain when he is a league one defender at best most likely.

We have done it for years and while you can make a few quid here and there, we are never going to compete with the “Big 6” type teams financially. Therefore, we have to try and create a way of developing youth in greater quantity and being more ruthless is the best way of doing it.

Players are humans and have choices.

Any talented 12 year old being offered guaranteed 6 year holistic education programs at City isn't going to sign up for Squid games at Everton.

We wouldn't be able to field a team if we didn't keep players like Welch around for a while, who tbf has been on multiple loans.

Youth development isn't an exact science, players can improve at different times or conversely their progress can stall when you think they will make it. Paul Scholes is a classic example as Man Utd were unsure about him and rumour is they were about to let him go but he progressed rapidly and unforeseenly and the rest is history

1 every 2 years is probably a good barometer to judge it on.
Gordon being 4 years ago, Samuels Smith or Lawrence were probably the next one from 2 years ago, but we sold them, with Armstrong looking like the next candidate....plus sales of players like Cannon & Simms, the acadamy has done ok

No offense but you have no clue what you are talking about and should listen to those more knowledgeable than you.

Just like in first team football, the younger under 21s do need the odd 'experienced' player around them to help them through games etc.
If you have a talented 18 year old playing Centre back, does it help them more playing alongside a talented 16/17 year old, or a 22 year old who has played in the football league and by all accounts has a decent attitude?

Branthwaite ahs massively benefited from playing alongside Tarkowski in my opinion.

Some clubs even throw in 'on field coaches' like Spearing at the reds.
